My favorite joy of chickenraising is watching them eat and drink. Have you ever seen any animal that appreciates and relishes food and water as much as a chicken seems to?And don't you love that excited noise and palsy the roosters go into when the spot something wonderful to eat. It's like they're saying grace. After reading the chickens and styrofoam entries, it's established that chickens will eat most anything, and my husband said one of ours once drank spilled gasoline. So, we have lots of testimonials of folks whose chickens have survived the odds. Are there any sad stories of when they didn't?

One of my free range chicks got in a fight with a centepede (they get up to ten inches long out here) when it was away from it's mama. The centepede bit it as the chick was biting the centepede... the chick's potential treat killed it... well the poisonous bite did. I don't begrudge the centepede though... the chick bit it first, he was just defending himself.

Dang! Those sound scary. Guess the closest we have to that in Ga. might be a scorpion.

I recently lost my hen duck. An autopsy showed this... a nail...

One of our hens recently died from what we believe was an impacted crop after eating a large silk flower that was in a flower box on ours kids' playhouse.

I lost a beautiful cockeral to eating molded food.

It had been raining a lot, and since he was the smallest he was being shoved away from the feeder. After the necropsy was completed I found moldy feed in some crevices in the coop floor.

My Lilith ate some broken glass and goodness knows what else, she's always eating non-edibles like pop can tabs and such. She survived, but she does have problems keeping weight on.
