Has anyone seen peafowl swim?

Leo 7,
I forgot about that train

I was thinking youngun or a hen when trying to see how well they can swim, I can see how they could drown quickly with such a train.

Thank you so much for sharing these photos they are great!

I am not sure, but I remember Andy's Peafowl Sanctuary said once a few years ago that when he got a white peacock he was dirty, so he gave him a bath and he seemed to like it and he floated a bit. I personally have gotten a bucket and cleaned my white peas when they were little dirty beasts. They definitely struggled with me but I held them afloat in the bucket and after they got all clean they soon got all dirty again.

I have seen a video of a turkey gobbler that thought he was a duck. I think he was raised by ducks? It would show him go out into a pond and swim around. Ooh I found the video of the turkey here it is!

Albert is adorable, thanks for sharing that video. Yesterday I was leaving to go to a dr. appt. and right down the road a huge bird walked out of the trees onto the shoulder of the road. I was so far away I couldn't see details and my first thought was that one of my Peas was loose. As I got closer I saw it was a really tall wild turkey tom. He hightailed it back into the woods as soon as he realized my car was getting closer. Boy was he big!

They can swim a short way and then the wet feathers pull them down
This green Peacock has very luck that the riverbank is not to far.
The pictures are taken in the wild

Thanks Leo! Great pictures too. I guess we have confirmation that they can, and do swim, but only for short distances as their feathers can become waterlogged.

I've also noticed peafowl carry their wings much lower on their body than geese or ducks, making me guess that it would be difficult or impossible for them to take off from the water.

We have lots of wild turkeys around here too and they really do resemble peafowl in size and body shape. I've heard reports from people in the area that they've seen one of the local free-ranging peafowl hanging around with a flock of wild turkeys.

our peas will wade in the kids kiddie pool, its only 12 or so inches deep, they'll jump in and walk around on hot days, so they seem to enjoy water. we don't have anything like a pond they could swim in. hope that helps.
