Hey, i've got a young slw and hes developed swelling in one of his legs 2 weeks ago, and its increased in size over the last week. he was walking on it fine until 2 days ago, now he sits more and limbs a bit while running. maybe a month ago i woke up to the lengthy noise they make if they get a fright or has gotten hurt but couldn't tell what happened as he didn't carry on once i got there, not sure if that's related. i have a barred rock cockrel, same age, was raised together so they have been working out who's boss in a non violent way so cant think what else it might be apart from hurting himself jumping from the 1.5 meter tree where they sleep or if its some disease. he still eats fine.

I've tried googling but nothing i've seen is this swollen

cheers

I had something like this happen to one of my cockerels. I regret not making a thread because it got bad and infected fast, he was culled quickly. Sorry I can't help but I want to follow along and see what others say.

I would wonder if it is a sign of avian leukosis or Mareks disease. There is a type of avian leukosis called marble leg syndrome or osteopetrosis. The pictures of it I have seen are of both legs being involved. Both Mareks and avian leukosis are caused by viruses.

How does the other leg look? Whatever it is, I would wonder if it is some type of tumor. Here is a link about avian leukosis and the picture below is a picture of osteopetrosis or marble leg disease, a type of avian leukosis:

When my cockerel had it happen it started off really small then quickly expanded down the leg and up the leg, increasing in width and it became clear that it was badly infected. My flock does have Marek's but I think I remember reading that it does not cause swelling.
