Has anyone tried this...?

Love my chocolate

I used to use this stuff in the gardens of a large estate I used to care for. I does smell wonderful, looks great and keeps the weeds out. I would not use it in the run because it also keeps moisture in. You want the run to stay dry or it'll stink and attract flies/maggots. Not a good choice for the run but great for the flower beds. I live in a sandy area so I don't feel I need to add anything to the run. It's just sandy dirt. I rake it once a week and add DE once in a while.

That's good advice. Maybe i'll just stick to putting it in the flower beds then. The thought of chocolate smelling mulch seems so interesting...

Yeah I have DE in there as well -- I haven't had much trouble with it retaining to much moisture although I didn't lay it as think as you would around flower beds. My ladies move it around a lot with there feet -- scratching for bugs -- so maybe that helps as well? I like it for my run -- which again is only for 7 chickens and not used as much since they free-range most off the day.

Its probably only bad for dogs as Chocolate is toxic to them and maybe what is in the cocolate is also in the bean shell.. Just a thought.
