They just follow their nose, and their eyesight can get obscured by wrinkles when their head is down.
I actually read something once that said that the loose skin around the head and neck plus the huge droopy ears were actually intentional to more or less blind and deafen them when they are tracking to minimize distractions.

The giant ears are big enough that not only do they stir the scent near the nose but they close the ear canal. Yes they can appear deaf when on a scent.
The saggy face does act as blinders when that nose is down too.
Yes it was deliberately bred into them.

While the puppies are very cute......I am used to very expressive faces in my dogs. This will be a learning thing for me for sure.

Edited because autocorrect got me again.

That makes sense! I also read the ears help blow/wave/flap the scent to the nose haha

Super duper expressive face. :D

Thanks, guys, for "dog-watching" with me! We got him! He's a nervous, distracted mess right now, poor guy, but he'll be okay. Lij loves him already!
:wee
Aww, just remember you can win any Sheltie over with treats lol! Most adult Shelties do need some time to adjust as they are very much a one person, one family type of dog.
