Has it Gone as you expected ?

Whether it be the amount of live chics you hatched, to the building of the coops, to the shipments of chics to your home?


I for one have been blessed with a high rate of hatches from my Silver Lace WY chickens.

I wanted two hens, and that was it.

I have 46 chicks in my brooder, 26 coming in June, and a reserve champion rooster in my backyard. I also have plans to build a fancy custom coop in my backyard.

No, things have not gone as planned, but I sure like the way it has turned out!

I'm only a few days in, but so far it hasn't gone like I expected either.

For the first thing, they are so darn cute!! I just want to watch them and watch them and watch them.. too bad I have other things that have to get done also! Not only are they cute, but they are hilarious. I was watching them play chick games last night (my favorite is "Dive bomb your sister" where one chick takes a flying leap into a group of quiet ones, and they all run peeping in different directions)
For some reason I also had sort of a dark look on it. I thought a bunch would die in the first 48hrs. So far we haven't lost ANY <knock on wood>.

And now I want MORE AND MORE!

So nope, hasn't gone quite like I thought, either. It's been much better.

Things are going well, but I definitely wasn't expecting:

1. It would take so long to get the coop done
2. The chicks would grow out of the first brooder I used
3. My Orpingtons would need to be separated from the SLW's and the brahmas because they keep getting picked on
4. I had no idea that they would grow so fast! And eat so much!!!

Who would have thought one chick would change your whole world? I didn't think it would but you can't have just one! What started out as a simple hobby turns into a full blown obsession! I thinks its better then post toasties!

I never expected to want every breed there is, and I am well on my way!

Sort of...I never realized how much people look at you like you have 3 heads full of writhing snakes when you say you have chickens...
I didn't know any of the "rules".
But danged if I won't give 'em up without a fight.
I live vicariously through the rest of Hatchaholics Anonymous...
