Hatch Day 23 and Possible malposition

Thank you. So far I have 3 out and one part of the way out. I’ve had to help every single one. 1. Upside down. 2. Upside down and leg above head. I was wrong. He did have his wing above his head. 3. Sideways. 4. Sideways and trying to zip around the air cell. It was too dry for him to pip through and his shoulder was partly blocking original pip. Oh and he pipped a blood vessel? I thought maybe I had hit it but the blood was clotted. All were shrink wrapped. I was thinking possibly genetics but I don’t think so because they are from different lines. Could it be because they had gotten cold multiple times? The 3 that are back under mom seem to be doing good so far.

#2 originally his foot was up on the other side of his head

#4 He’s still in his shell.

The chicks of my Sponge that I described before hatched out fine. I guess she was just unlucky. That said, I have had more eggs hatching out of the smaller end in recent years. They're usually okay, though, or need a little help. It's a little weird, but I don't mind helping them much so long as it means they survive. I'm a more hands-on hatcher than most, but I know it's saved several chicks that otherwise would have died in the shell and I feel that it also helps prepare me for my future as a doctor.

I’m a registered nurse so I’m definitely a hands on person. So far, helping them out has saved them in my opinion. They are doing well. The first 3 are with mom and she is doing great!

Well I had one that I wasn’t sure if needed help or not. I left it alone but it didn’t make it. Not sure it would have even if I were to help because the yolk hadn’t fully absorbed. Another one that I did help, chick #4, never did real good and didn’t make it. I dont know for sure what happened. Stayed partially in the shell, like in the picture, for over a day and she never did anything.

So out of the 5 live chicks I had to help 4 out, and 1 hatched by itself really quick. We have 2 white silkies, 1 black silkie, and 2 Buff Brahma bantam/d’anvers mix cross chicks. All are doing great and mom has been amazing with them.

Sounds like it was just a bad batch of eggs. Some people say it's better to let nature take its course, but some of us don't have the heart to abandon a baby in need. You did your best, good luck next time :hugs
