Two years ago we got four chicks and they were a small, happy backyard flock. Then a year ago one of the chickens dropped dead (Sudden chicken death syndrome?), And then this winter a hawk or eagle killed one of our chickens while they were in their run. I would like to hatch fertile eggs under one of the remaining two chickens when they become broody in the spring, but I know that you were supposed to separate the mother from any other adults in the flock. Will it be OK to have the non-mother chicken by herself for a few weeks? What would you recommend? One thing we could do is divide our chicken coop and run down the middle with some chicken wire or something similar, so that the two adult chickens can see each other, but the non-mother chicken can’t get at the chicks?
