Hatch home bad

I have watched many hens over the years hatch broods. I had a momma go broody came home from work to find chicks all were dead but one out of 9. I am stumped as to why? Some of the babies beaks were all splintered and bloody... I don't know if the momma did it or if they emerged that way. Any ideas? I do live in a different area then I used to so there is a different climate. I have never had this problem before.

I see that you mentioned that you have had broodies hatch before.

I note also that you have moved recently.

So, is this the same flock that you used to have when broodies hatched chicks and were the chicks left with the flock, same as they were this time?

Is the mumma who sat on these eggs a first time mum or has she had hatches before?

Where I am heading here and my couple of trains of thought are:

1. First time mumma, attacked chicks.
2. Different flock so different dynamics from when you hatched with broodies before and flock attacked chicks or
3. Same flock but change of accommodation has them now attacking chicks that they would not have in the past.

1. Yes first time mom. She still has one chick.....I wondered if she got stressed and attacked.
2. Different flock all together. One other momma in this flock has hatched chicks she did well.

I had a Leghorn hen go broody she would not leave the nest and even though she didn't have eggs she kept setting. I felt bad for he so I gave her a bantam hens egg that was ready to hatch. To my horror the broody hen killed the little chick when it hatched she pecked it I felt so bad.
