*HATCHARIES* Where, who, and dependability.

Yes please! I'd appreciate all the help i could get finding these breeds. Also do you have any other breed suggestions ones that go broody and are friendly/sociable. And also cold hard these winters are sure wicked here.
Another place you can try are any poultry shows in your area. I wouldn't get any birds there. Too many horror stories about sick birds, but since you don't have any birds now I wouldn't be worried about bringing some illness back home. However, you can ask around for breeder recommendations and pre-orders for spring hatchings.

Meyer's Hatchery also has sexed Barnevelders (and Speckled Sussexes), and their minimum live poultry order is three chicks! :D I haven't done live order, either, but most people seem happy with them, and seem to get nice-mannered chickens with good laying rates, I feel like. :) Oh, and, Mypetchicken gets/got their birds from Meyer's, I believe, and their minimum is three, too, I think, for some states... And guess what? They actually have sexed bantams!

Wyandottes, Brahmas, and Chanteclers are some really good cold hardy ones. But Buff Orpingtons should be, too, and are also friendly and do go broody, making really good mothers! Silky Bantams are probably thee broodiest breed, though, and super docile and calm. =) And I've heard that Speckled Sussexes are cold hardy and make good mothers, and are friendly. I'd love to own a Speckled Sussex!

Oh I've already heard of so many breeds of chickens that I have never heard of before!! It's like finding a new brand that you fall in love with!!!! I used to have speckled Sussex back in the Pacific northwest. My favorite girl her name was "SnowBird" she was loud and proud and LARGE and in charge. They are so sweet and would follow me everywhere!! They would even follow me in to my wood trails I had in my back yard. I miss them so. That's why I want more :wee

I love my Speckled Sussex named Sadie Thompson. She is so cute and curious, she follows me and wants to put her nose in everything. (of course they all follow me!) Wish I had more like her. My Easter Eggers are quite gentle and nice and I had one that went broody 2 weeks after starting to lay! I just kept taking her out of the nest box and she got the message and is laying again now. My other favorite is my Brahma. Very gentle and very pretty. My Silver Laced Wyandottes are pretty but they lay small eggs, I have found all wyandottes lay smaller sized eggs. Choose wisely! Get a book from the library that talks about chicken breeds so you get the temperament you want. Good Luck, you'll have fun! :hugs

Welcome! I've been very happy with my Cackle orders, and they do carry the breeds you are interested in. I love my Speckled Sussex hens, too, their Barnvelders are really nice. Try to go together with another person in your area to place a chick order! That way you can get fewer chicks, and have better hatchery choices too.
Get them vaccinated against Marek's disease at the hatchery.
To increase your confusion, there are two good sites; feathersite for many breeds and photos, and Henderson's breed chart, for short but useful breed advice.
For ND, avoid breeds recommended for hot weather, and avoid Silkies, unless you plan to have them separate in with assistance in winter.
I have the white Chanties from cackle, and also Wyandottes, three colors, and don't leave out Easter Eggers for those green eggs, and then the French Marans.

My Barnevelders from Ideal Poultry were VERY pretty. Some were the typical brown and one had black ground color and that was the one I kept until I moved because I thought she was prettier than the brown. Ideals minimum is $25 so you'd be looking at a minimum order of 7 chicks if you chose pullets. They are out of SS for the year, though.

Cackle has some beautiful birds and great quality. I've never had either of those breeds from them, though. My Rosecombs from them won ribbons at the fair.
