Hey there!

I have heard an awful lot about Ideal Poultry... however, I cannot order from there because I absolutely can NOT have roos. I only ordered 6 chicks, and ordered from mypetchicken.com. Has anyone ever ordered from them? How was your experience? TIA!

I'm interested in this topic, too. I plan on ordering about four chicks from MPC.

I ordered the EE pullet special last fall. Out of 26 pullets, only 2 turned out to be roos. That's some pretty accurate sexing there. I'm very happy with my girls.

My very first order of chicks ever is coming from Mypetchicken in about 3 weeks. I'll keep everyone posted. First ship date was March 15th, but they bumped it up to March 1st. Yay!

We're expecting 1 blue silkie, 2 ee, 5 assorted standards. I'm interested to see what the mix is.

I haven't heard of any problems with mypetchicken on any of the threads.

Here is a hatchery review thread... see if you can find anything on there...

ETA: Personally I LOVE the way their website looks. It is very easy to navigate and they have alot of fun pictures. Seems like a great place to me! Cackle is super slow loading.... ideals... its ok. I love user-friendly websites.

I wanted to add some Q's and A's. Straight from the site... HOPE IT HELPS!!!

Q: How come you can't ship just one chick?

A: Unlike other hatcheries that may add "males for warmth" to fill out a small order, we will never do that because we understand how important it is for our customers to be able to receive small orders for their urban and suburban locations: that is why they purchase from us in the first place!

Q: What is my best minimum order?

A: We don't have required minimums per breed, but the total number of birds you order must meet the minimum order for your area.

It is extremely important that you calculate your minimum order correctly. As few as three large fowl chicks (or five chicks in orders containing bantams) can be shipped to major cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Portland OR, etc. due to the speed with which they can be delivered. A good rule of thumb to use when trying to determine if your city is considered a major for the purposes of shipping is whether or not it has an international (as opposed to a regional) airport.

If you live within 30 minutes of a major city, the minimum is five large fowl chicks (or seven chicks when your order contains bantams).

For any town or rural area that is more than 30 minutes from a major city (or any islands), our minimum is eight large fowl (or 10 chicks if bantams are ordered).

In addition, if you are ordering both bantams and large fowl in the same order, you must order a minimum of three of each size, although they may be different breeds.

Q: What if one of my chicks dies on the way to me?

A: First, please be sure to calculate the correct minimum number of chicks that can ship to your area safely. You can read about our minimum order policy on each chick ordering page, and in detail below in the related questions on this page.

Losses are rare (we see them happen about 1% of the time), but they do occur, so we recommend that if you have children, you make sure they are not around when you open the package. If you do experience any losses, please let us know within 48 hours--your baby chicks have a 100% live arrival guarantee.

Keep in mind that we cannot ship one chick at a time, as that is not safe for them, so a replacement for a loss is not always possible. You can either choose to get a refund for the lost chick, or a credit for a free chick on your next order with us that meets the minimum for your area.

We ordered 14 chicks from MPC last August. ALL 14 were hens, including 5 bantams (3 Silkies, 1 EE and Brahma). They did an excellent job at sexing the chickens. All 14 arrived healthy and are doing very well. MPC has a great "breed selector" tool on their website. You can search for "egg color", "winter hardiness", "docile", "egg laying ability", etc. http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/which-breed-is-right-for-me.aspx This tool was very helpful to a newcomer like me in choosing our "first" chicks. Plus everyone at MPC was helpful in answering my questions.
