Hatchery barred breed of some sort....

Thankyou! Do you know how Privett BA's usually turn out? If they breed a fairly heavy strain, or if they're the smaller ones focusing on egg production? I read on the Buckeye club website that they get their Buckeyes from Sand Hill Preserve, and I really like my Australorps from them.

People have very good things to say about the Privett birds year after year. Barred Rocks should all be great egg producers.

I know what you mean cactusrota.
I so wanted some Heritage Rhode Island Reds even though they lay a little less then the production breed Rhode Island Reds, which almost everyplace carries. They didnt have any were I ordered so we went with the traditional production breed you commonly see everywhere. I love them anyhow but the heritages are soooo much darker red it's hard not to love.
I had austrolorps once, ours ended up being very aggressive with our smaller Easter Eggers though so we re home them. They were raised together and everything but still just harassed them all the time. Have you ever had any trouble with yours? I've heard only nice things about their temperment usually.

I'm really looking hard at Buckeyes. Problem is, I have such a hard time making decisions. I'm also intrigued by Sand Hill Preservations "Mystery Chicken" assortment, these Aloha birds seem really cool, but I also want to add some more NN's, I really want some Russian Oroffs, and I'd like to try some Bresse. I'm hopeless.. :p

I haven't had any troubles with Australorps yet. It was the americaunas that gave me troubles. The last time I had them I had homer pigeons at the same time and they would sneak into the pigeon loft, kick them off their eggs and kick their eggs to the floor and lay their own eggs in their place!! :( They just seem more prone to getting into trouble to me.
That said, I've got myself a couple black EE's that I picked out of my brothers flock. He has a love of buying mystery mixed barnyard hatching eggs for incubating and gets all kinds of crazy mixes. He let me pick some out to bring home and I got the two EE's (they lay brown eggs... :hmm ) A cockeral that I think might be part Minorca, and two Naked Necks that I posted about in that thread. Unfortunately, they're all mixed into a cousins flock up in Utah right now because, well, life happened. I'm hoping to get them home the end of this month. Those five are most likely going to be my base flock, add three pullets from the Australorps I'm raising right now, probably a couple of the Barred Rocks. If the mystery cockeral doesn't pan out I may keep one Australorp rooster.

Lovely looking flock! I do know the indecisive feelings! I had a really hard time deciding what kind of mix we wanted and ended up changing it half a dozen times, thankfully we ordered so early that they could change it without to much trouble with enough notice. I would end up with a slew of chickens of all kinds if I could! One of our favs is our little Dorking, as they have a cool history and she is the runt of them all. Hard not to love the littlest one. We didn't have any trouble with our Eater Eggers, but I think it depends on each bird I suppose. We've had super nice hens and super moody hens, kinda the same with Roos. We are hopeing that our current Roo works out as he's our only male we ordered and is more for protection of the flock than breeding. We lost a lot to a neighbor dog, a weasel, and a owl. My hopes is that he will alert them if there is danger as they are suppose to! We are eagerly awaiting more feathering to come in and we'll probably post pics to see if anyone can help us figure who's who.

Dorkings!! That's another one I've been eyeing!
I had so much more problems with predators when I had pigeons. They are serious predator bait. After I got rid of them, I only had problems with dogs. Mainly my own dogs. But they're getting pretty old now. My next dogs are gonna be raised around chickens for sure.
I always thought I was immune to chicken math....

We got pretty lucky with our dogs thankfully, we got them about a month after our chicks so they were raised prettt close so thankfully no problems. This batch of chicks we have our two dogs plus my parents 6 year old lab (they are in Arizona) and so far no problems. The lab took a little more work, but as time goes she's starting to realize they are our pets too.
We love our little Dorking, she's so funny being the runt.
