Hatchery help

I might do the minimum on my pet chickens.com because my minimum there is nine. Everywhere else I’m seeing a minimum of 15 and 25. We already got 10 pullets this year So we didn’t want to add a Ton more
Most hatcheries are only going to sell straight run for chicks. Your better to try to find a local breeder or buy from the hatchery and order the minimum especially if they have what you want. Whatever you order you may lose a couple so ordering a few extra would make up for that. If you end up with more than you want you can always sell a few. Plus you have a better odds of getting pullets. It is like playing the lottery. Good luck
at once

The TSC in my area is slacking on their variety this year. I did get to New Hampshire pullets and to see in our star pullets from there but everything else they had was straight run. At least in my area. I just never looked for chicks online before so I wasn’t sure where to start And how to know if I hatchery is going to be safe to order from
This will be my first time ordering chicks also. I look on BYC and when someone mentions where they get their chicks I make a note and then look it up. I am going with TSC because of price and I don't need show quality birds just healthy ones. I have had luck so far with the TSC in my area even if sometimes the bins are marked incorrectly.

edit: so I'll order them on line.

I can agree I have never received any unhealthy checks from TSC and I have one lady in there that really knows her stuff and the benchmarking incorrectly is really really bad at the one I go to. If she’s there I’ll buy but if she’s not I won’t. I don’t need show birds either. I just want to try some different breeds and have my eggs. I was able to Figure out cackle hatchery a little better and they actually have more available it seems like then the rest. Prices seemed somewhat fair also

If you can order the catalog from Cackle it may give you some other ideas on chicken breeds.

edit: And it is FREE

I could but I found how to navigate the site pretty well. I would have to see how long it takes the catalog to come every time I order a seed catalog it takes like two months. It seems as though they have My olive eggers! And the Wesummers. Seems like Myers was sold out of a whole lot but cackle hatchery seems to have a lot of availability of a lot of breeds. And the prices were lower than a lot of the other ones

:woot I hope you get the chicks you are looking for.

I got some marans, cream legbars and isbars from Thunder Creek Farm. They're great birds, and I've ordered some more marans and spitzhaubens from her to come in May. They're hatching olive eggers now and if I remember right they're $12 each. More if you get started pullets (which is what I do since I can't have a rooster in town). It's pricey, but they take great care of their birds. thundercreekfarm.com
Good luck!!

I’ve never ordered chickens from a hatchery online before but there are certain chickens I would like but I can’t find any hatcheries that will ship me just a few chickens. My pet chicken says there’s no minimum order but once you get into it apparently there is depending on your ZIP Code. And at my ZIP Code I’d have to order at least nine. I would like to order from Myers but they do not have what I was looking for him and I went to ideal hatchery and Man they charge for everything. There was a small order fee plus the shipping fee plus an insurance fee if you want to make sure there’s no males in there. At that rate a chicken would probably cost like $70. How many charges can you add on? And on cackle hatchery I wasn’t having luck finding much of anything. Does anybody have any suggestions? Anything I should know About ordering online? I would really appreciate any advice
Buy local.
It is spring time. Chick fever season. Every feed store in our area has chicks or a community cork board with local people posting FOR SALE.
We are breeding big time right now and sell out immediately on craigslist in a snap. There are tons of locals breeding right now. PLUS YOU GET TO PICK what is right in front of you. Not somebody miles away chucking chicks in a box and slapping a stamp on it.
Plus you are helping your local economy and keeping your money in local hands.

I just ordered chicks for the first time online. I went with cackle. They were reasonable and you can do small orders for a 25$ fee but I went ahead and got 15 min and will sell the extras. It shouldn't be hard there isn't much variety in my area and people may be interested in something different. I called cackle and they were very helpful and have lots of info about the breeds I was interested in and hatch dates. Maybe give them a call. I haven't actually received the chicks yet I'm super nervous I hope they get here healthy.
