Hi, so today I picked up two chicks from a local hatchery. I had purchased then last week and had arrangement to pick them up Saturday. All I can say after picking them up is I am appalled of the conditions these birds were in. I literally cried when I left there. Even if you raise chickens for meat and don't view then as a pet you should never disrespect a life even that of an animal. I am unsure how to deal with this. I do not know the laws or even if there is any for a back yard poultry breeder and seller. When I got there I was told the person whom I had been talking to (the owner) was not there. A child and a lady who seemed to not know anything assisted me to go into the backyard to get the 2 chicks. As they opened the shed 100 giver or take chicks literally ran out acting crazy and were all over the place looking for food\water. The child then preceded to grab the chicks that I told him I had paid for barefoot in the shed that was covered in layers of feces and dead baby chicks that were embedded in the shed floor. All the brooders were open and there were dead chickens smashed into the corners and floors of the brooders. These ones seemed to be fully feathered. Some of the chicks running around had all their feathers missing. They were filthy. I have never in my life seen anything like this. There was no food in any feeders and I could not tell if there was even water. I was ready to just walk away without the chickens but I could not. I was afraid I would be bringing home some disease but I could not leave them there in the conditions. I need advise on what I should do about this. Should I talk with the owner? I did call animal control but they are closed over the weekend. I have just never seen anything like this. In the last 10 years of raising a back yard flock and going to hatcheries I have never came across conditions as this. Any advise?

I am sorry if this is something I should not of posted here.

***???? Call again on Monday! Your absolutely to right to post on this and you're doing the right thing. Don't talk to the owner- just call the Humane society on Monday.
You're doing the right thing

I called Animal Control and they went out. Found no dead chickens but said conditions were defiantly not up to par. They said that the owner told them she only sells temporarily. They said she needed a licence to have a business. Am I happy with the results? NO but at least she knows she needs to clean it up. I will never order from her again. This hatchery is in Taylorsville Utah. I will continue to follow up on this. She has a Facebook page and a Web Site. Would you recommend I post on the FB page?

Thank you for taking the steps to make improvement in those poor animals lives! Me personally- I would post something on her facebook page. But I am crazy about animals and don't care what others think lol
