So I want to add more Buff Orpington & Black Austrolourp hens to my coop. Is there any hatcheries in Alabama? Or should I go to our local poultry auction?
I know in an auction it is best to stay away from sick looking birds because it could spread to your existing flock. I just want to get some new hens to help me on egg production but also a good broody hen. I don't know what is better Hatchery or Auction? :idunno:oops:

I would find a breeder or hatchery. There are poultry auctions here and they’re disgusting, the birds are exposed to each other no matter what, a healthy bird can easily pick up something there. I don’t trust auctions ever.

Breeder or NPIP exclusive auction if your looking for breeding birds. Hatchery if your just looking for egg makers.

thank you! I just want to know which hatcheries shipping isn't to terribly bad on price. Also our auctions are actually really clean surprisingly at least that is what my brother said when he went last month and his birds look healthy. But I am most likely going to go with a hatchery.

Hatchery. Strombergs is GREAT for birds that are true to breed, have ordered a variety of breeds a few times. (maybe not show quality, but look and lay the part) They ship in spring. Don't order for too early had a batch mishandled by post office all but one Sultan perished. They can be Marek's vaccinated which is a nice plus.

Also I found a Friday night auction here and it has 5/5 star rating so I was thinking about going to see if they have any curtunix quail. Is quail poo toxic to chickens? If so is it possible to get them as long as they have a separate cage? Also how many males to female ratio?

As long as the quail are separate from the chickens they'll be fine. 1 male and 3-5 females per cage.
