Hatchery Suggestions for Meat Birds????

Quote:
As wonderful as it would be to have that option, since I live in Alaska and no one up here hatches out meat birds (they all ship them in), no matter which hatchery I go with the birds will take two days to get here. That's why I was looking for folks' input on hatcheries.

I was told by our 4H person that all the 4h kids got the same shipment of birds at the feed store. We told them how many, they called when they got them all. Maybe that's just how our county does it?? Call your county extension 4H person and be SURE!

We had a hard time keeping them alive in 104 degree weather on move in day at the fair. Have replacements ready to go just in case.

She took both goat and birds to the fair, and could only auction one or the other, she did the goat.

We got to eat the birds.

I got my 50 Cornish Xs from Welp Hatchery and they have been excellent. Going on five weeks and excellent health, strong legs, and a hearty appetite. It took 2 days for the shipment to reach me here in Idaho and no problems (I did lose 1 on day 2 but Welp sent 53 total). The chicks should love the weather in Nenana. I'v spent a lot of time in Talketna and Dillingham.

Cornish X's would be the only ones to make the weigh in requirements in the time frame you are working with.

I ve had highs in the low 50's and lows in the mid 20's for the last 2 weeks here in Idaho and the X's are doing fine. I've got another 50 plus 10 Blue Wyandotts coming in the 3rd week of May. I hope they do as well but it will be (I hope) into the 80,s by the middle of June.

I haven't weighed mine yet but when our kids were in 4H we usually had 7 lb birds in 8 weeks. If its really cold where you a raise them (coop/barn) you may want to add a week to be on the safe side.
