Hatching 2 days late?

I was expecting a current clutch of eggs to hatch on the 17th. I gave them an extra day and decided if they didn't hatch then, I'd do a float test and proceed from there... well, this morning (the 19th) I went to get the eggs to do the test, and finally! I hear them chirping and ONE egg has a tiny hole broken thru.

Is this very common? Are there any problems I should watch for when a hatch is delayed like this? If there are, I wanted to be prepared to know what to do right away.

Cooler incubation temps can cause the development to slow down, therefore causing

the chick to hatch late. Nothing to worry about really. Good luck with your eggs!

Yes I would suspect that your incubation temps were low probably by about a degree. I highly recommend the Brinsea Spot Check thermometer. I had the same problem with my first hatch as you and I got the thermometer. I verified that the temps on the digital read out on my bator were reading a degree higher than what the temperature was at the top of the eggs. For my second hatch I had to set the temp higher to get it right at egg level. Good luck on the rest of your hatch!

We are using Brinsea actually... The room itself though was pretty cold, so maybe that had something to do with it. I moved the incubator to another room, that is warmer where we have the chicks brooding.

My bator is a Brinsea as well. I think the problem is that the bator is reading the temperature at the top of the bator and not down at egg level. It is a forced air model which is supposed to make the temp the same through out the bator but I have found that the temp is a degree lower down near the eggs. That is why I got the thermometer. It is very accurate.

When I first read it I also thought Happiness was saying the 17th day, but she was refering to the date.
