Ok, so my Bantam went broodie and I let her keep 8 eggs. Two were quitters, and she hatched 5 so far. Everything was going well, until the feral cats found her and the chicks. I found her fighting them off this am, so a grabbed her and her chicks up and put them in a hutch inside the coop so they couldn't get to her. Problem is that there was 1 egg left to hatch, but she won't sit on it now and is trying to get her chicks to drink and eat. I was bringing the egg in to figure out what to do with it when I dropped it. So now it's all cracked up, but still together. The chick inside moved and has been peeping. I do not have an incubator, so what do I do to try and let him hatch out??

any help appreciated. Thanks!

Does your broody show any interest now that it's peeping?

ETA - I'm sorry this happened

I can only imagine your horror as it fell!

None, she won't even go back to the nest and has moved the other chicks and made a new nest.

You might try putting the egg on a heating pad with a thermometer and keeping the heat as close to 99 degrees as possible. Or in a box with a lamp the would keep the temps up near the 99 to 100 range. Humidity may be less important since the egg is cracked, but I'm sure others on here will know more than I.

I had it in a styrofoam cooler with a heating light and a cup of water, but I just took it back out to the broodies pen. She was sitting on the other chicks, so I just slid him up under her from behind. I figured that it probably has the best chance there, if she will keep it under her, so I will check back in a few minutes and make sure she is still sitting on it.

Thanks. I'm afraid I probably injured it when I dropped it.
