Hatching and raising guinea keets!

Soooo cute!
Thanks! The mom, Ridges, is an African white guinea so the all white one is when she mated with another African white male. The two keets with brown on top of them still have the same mom, just different dad. Their dad was Guineass (Gi-ne-iss) who is my only surviving Royal Purple. Actually, yesterday, Ridges decided to go broody on twelve eggs. We have four old Guinea eggs we keep in her nest at all times, so that they do not switch nests. She was on the 8 eggs that are only a few days old. I needed my family to come out and help me get her off of the nest. I had nudged her gently with the round end of a hoe, she backed off the nest, puffed her wings and tail feathers out, and opened her mouth. Normally she is the only Guinea I can touch! A family member brought out a curtain rod, it is flexible so it wouldn't hurt her. He started jabbing her and smacking her in the chest and side ( GENTLY). She started pecking it and made herself look HUGE!!! I have never dealt with a broody animal before, so this was terrifying but amazing at the same time. She was all puffed up, stil pecking it, so I decided why not wave my arms and try to scare her. I did and she just looked at me with eyes that were not hers. She looked nothing like the sweet, trusting Guinea I knew. I advanced on her, still waving my arms. When I had gone to get my family to help, the person that I was out with said she saw my two white males go near her, a few seconds later they came running back. With the help of me and the other two family members, we got her off the nest. The one with the curtain rod was chasing her near my coop so I took my chance and grabbed the eight eggs. My family member and I walked as fast as we could to the coop. My other family member with the rod had gotten everyone in but Ridges, Guineass, and Madame Pearl ( she is a female Pearl gray. I just named them so I know who is who and so it makes it fun.) My family member who was with me the whole time advanced on the three guineas. We got Ridges and Guineass in but Madame Pearl flew over my family members head! After a minute of two, we got her in. I carefully went in the coop with food and the eggs, but to my utter shock, the normal Ridges was back! She walked up to me and looked at me all like " Sorry about that, Mom. Please forgive me. Can I have food now?" I put the food in the feeder and walked to a dust bathing spot in their coop, put the eggs In it ( Watching her EVERY move). I went out to dinner came back, looked to see if she went broody, and she didn't. But she could have over night. It was amazing to see how different her personality was. She is normally the only Guinea I can touch, but she was terrifying.
Hope you enjoyed the story!

Hey all! I have a sad story. So I went out of town, and my Agriculture teacher is taking care of the baby guineas. Well, all was fine until yesterday, May 25 2022. My teacher reached out to us and said Snowy, the white one, drowned. Snowy was my favorite, as it was very sweet. The teacher thinks that Snowy jumped off the box that is in their dog cage they are in, and lost consciousness as it fell into the water. It stinks. But it is not my teachers fault. I feel bad for her, finding the baby dead. She must feel so bad. I do not want her to though. Its life, but sometimes life really sucks. R.I.P. Snowy! I'll always remember you, baby Guinea!

That's so sad!

Oh my gosh, I am ready to give up on hatching and raising Guinea keets. The two piebalds, Pickles and Fluffy, got killed by raccoons the day before I was going to pick them up. I feel so bad for my teacher. She says she is the worst pet-sitter ever, and I am like "No! You are amazing! It's just life!" So yeah, raccoons happened, and I hate it. It sucks. R.I.P Snowy, Fluffy, and Pickles! I will always remember and love you, my little Fluffballs!😭😭😭
