(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm very new to chickens, I actually won't be raising these chickens past their first few weeks but I visit a farm regularly and she said she would take any hatchlings. My daughter saw the baby chicks at the farm and picked up an egg and asked to take it home, I said sure thinking it was for breakfast and then she looked up at me and said "mommy, when will we get a baby chick?" So now I'm incubating eggs.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 0 - hope to have a property with my own chickens within the next year.
(3) What breeds do you have? None
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I visit the farm every 2 weeks, we started feeding them 2 visits ago and when we pulled up today the turkey literally rushed up to the car, fluffed her feathers bigger than i've ever seen her do and started following my daughter everywhere she went ( i was nervous for a split second bc i heard they can be vicious and it was the same size as her) but it really meant no harm and just stuck with her while she got the feed. Did they recognize the car or the sound of our voices?
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Horse back riding, snow boarding nd rock climbing
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am a single momma of a 5 year old girl and 90lb mix breed and awesome dog. I believe animals are therapeutic and really good for my daughters emotional and mental health.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found this site through a woman that posted a very helpful review on an amazon incubator. We started putting together a diy incubator and played around with light bulbs and melted a whole through the plastic container into my carpet with the wrong size bulb so my parents asked if they could buy me an incubator. I needed an affordable one and one woman wrote a very helpful review and mentioned that everything i needed to know about hatching chickens would be on this site.
