Hatching chicks question

I was told by a friend that it is common to have mutated chicks when incubating? Is this true? I realized it could happen, but I didn't know it was "common". Are there general causes when it does happen?

I'm still on the fence about buying a bator... am going nuts trying to decide!!!!!!!!

Maybe mutated isn't the right word?! LOL... Let me re-phrase.. a deformed chick...non-thriving...um... just an abnormal unhealhty chick is what I'm referring to.
