Hi all I bought 5 coturnix quail eggs 20 days ago. I let them sit in room temp as I got my homemade forced air incubator runnig. Today is day 18 of incubation and the should have started to hatch I did the float test and according to information I read online it said that if the eggs sink its a dud if it floats with most of the egg out of the water its a dud and if most of the egg is inder water exept for 30% of the egg its vvaible. So all my quail eggs showed viable. I decided to crack the shell of the first egg and there was nothing bit for the egg yolk. The same with the second egg. So then it must have meant that none of the eggs are going to have chicks in it so I opened up egg number 3 and there was a very tiny embrio. What happend. I decided not to open the rest of the eggs maybe there still will be some chicks in a week or so what do you guys think?.

The float test is the very last resort to see if your eggs are viable and should only be done once you have gone a couple of days at least past hatch day as the test itself can kill them.

I would leave your eggs in peace in their incubator for a couple of days and see what happens. Nature does not always run like clockwork and if today is hatch day, they are not technically even late yet.

Quail eggs are very fragile and all this messing won't help. We all get itchy fingers when incubating and the temptation to interfere is strong but try and resist to give them a chance to do their thing.
