Hi, I have just been looking on the site and noted that there have been other posts on this topic, but it is all new to me.
11 days ago one of my young Golden Brahma hens laid a huge (for a Brahma) egg, exactly twice the usual length and about double weight. I was fascinated by this and included it in a batch for incubation (probably mistaken as I now know). I have candled the egg a number of times in the last few days (incubation started 10 days ago) and there are two live embryos with one at the pointy end and one at the blunt end and membrane between. I would welcome advice as to what best to do when the time for hatching comes .I DO appreciate that I may end up with two dead chicks, but having mistakenly started the process I must do my best to try to keep at least one alive.
With many thanks to anyone who can help out,
Regards, Sandie

I don't think there is much you can do differently but wait and watch through incubation. . . At this point, you should have either both hatch or one hatch. I'd love to see updates on how those chicks do though.

I don't have any advise because I know NOTHING about this topic but I want to wish you the best of luck. I will defiantly subscribe to this topic, sounds very interesting.

Many thanks for the support. I found the video very helpful and will be ready with my knife, warm water etc. on day 21 or so if they survive until then.I have to confess to helping chicks out of the shell in the past if, and only if, they have completely run out of steam and would die otherwise, but I am always SO fearful of doing harm. That having been said I have a couple of full grown sturdy Brahmas who would not be here if I had not helped them along, even having to strap in a yolk sac remnant on one.
If they survive I will take pics. of them ( I already have taken pics. of the huge egg alongside of the egg that the same hen laid on the following day)
Kind Regards,
sandie

I'm with you on this one. I also think that I have two in an egg, and guess I'll find out pretty quick..less than a week to hatching time.

Hi Cynthia,
Please let us know how you get on.
My two are still alive and growing in their shell,

Now there are three... I got a duck egg today that was 100 grams. My others are all 60 grams.. I am pretty sure it is a double yolke- and will set it tonight just to see what may happen... i know people say not to...But it is such a rare thing- I at least want to try.

Well one of my Brahma hens (huge girl) who had been threatening to become broody for weeks did so with a vengeance (very possessive of the rubber eggs plus 2 Warren eggs under her). I carefully lifted her yesterday and replaced them with half of the fertile eggs from the incubator, but not the big one. She seemed pleased. Today I took all the remaining 7 eggs including the big one and replaced her on top of all 14.....she seemed VERY pleased ( a big bird who could easily cover even more). I plan to remove the big double yolker on day 19 or 20 and hatch it in the incubator to try to give the two babies a chance to emerge. I guess Mrs Broody (AKA Grey Lady.....huge stately, dignified hen) is not likely to want the chick or chicks if anything comes out alive?
Whatever Grey Lady is clucking and fussing with delight over the eggs which she will only have to incubate for about 9-10 days.......just as well that hens can't count!
Please keep us all updated on the other 'big eggs'
Sandie

I once incubated a double yolk duck egg, but the 2 chicks died on day 14.

I think they just ran out of room.

I hope you have better luck than I did!
