you candle them my best candler is downloading a free app on my phone called flashlight. I love it, it's great for candling the eggs.Wow, I am so glad to hear this, also a little sad, we broke some cooled eggs, thinking she had let them die. However, we have 8 eggs left, this is day 11. I am now so much more hopeful we might get some live chicks as she keeps kicking eggs out from under her, and I thought if they cooled it was a lost cause!
Okay here is a question. Is there anyway to tell if the eggs are still viable and have chicks inside? I know they are started, and have veins and a "glob".
So overly excited to see some hatched chicks!!!!!!

How on earth did you even find this thread? It's two years old. There are far more recent threads and stickies on how to candle your eggs and what to look for.
As for the kicking thing, well....this is why I use a bator.![]()
Thanks all for the advice, the eggs are chocolate and since I am obviously new at this... I figure candling will not do me a lot of good.In any case thanks for the feedback. One thing I have learned is not to take all information to heart the first time you hear it.
I found the thread by a search, because I was shocked to hear that eggs could cool down and still hatch, I wanted to see what others had to say.
Day 11: 8 viable eggs, 1 new beginner hen, one inexperienced chicken owner.
Will be a miracle if these eggs hatch!![]()
What I do with my dark eggs, I will candle them on both ends the air cell and the smaller end, USally can you tell by the smaller end. if something is going on inside. it's very hard to see threw a dark egg.Yes, by chocolate I mean dark brown in color. She has one light colored egg, so I attempted to candle it tonight. Frankly based on my inexperience, it looked empty. I know they are eggs, a chicken and potential chicks, but the ups and downs of my 11 day journey in attempting a natural hatch have been amazing. Again, it is my first try. Filled with disappoint after the candling, I began searching for incubators online, and am requesting information on good incubators for beginners.
I was able to confirm my chickens are laying fertilized eggs at this time.![]()
