I did a search and couldn't find an answer to this question, so am posting it. Will it affect the chicks? Is it safe? I am selling hatching mutt eggs right now, and want to know if I'll have to stop for a bit if I deworm my flock. Thanks

I don't see why you shouldn't try. It might decrease your hatch rate, but it should be fine.

You have to wait 2 weeks to eat the eggs because it takes that long for them to get rid of the drug. So the eggs might have ivermectin in it, and I have no idea what that would do to the chicks, but I imagine it would be fine.

I goggled and found a few ... Here is one source, from this site ..

Ivomec is also a good wormer, but it is NOT water soluble and won't work in an automatic water font. We dose each bird individually with an eye dropper. For adult birds we use 4 drops on the tongue. For chicks, over 6 months, we use 2 drops. This stays in their system for 30 days. Ivermectin is not effective against capillary worms. Both wormers are available at TSC. Ivermectin should not be used during the breeding as it kills the egg fertility for 2 - 3 weeks.

Hope this helps.

Thank you! I was having no luck in searching and really appreciate it.

Potential for deformed chicks you have to cull is enough reason for me not to try to hatch eggs while medicating with anything. I definitely would not sell eggs while medicating the birds. Depending on the medication I would still eat them or feed them to the pets. Ivermectin is safe enough and used in humans as well as most animals so I'd actually have no problem eating those. I've ingested enough horse dewormer on accident I don't see how if it even gets in to the eggs it could do any harm. Some dogs and all cats are sensitive to it though so be careful using ivermectin around them unless prescribed by a vet for that animal.
