Hatching my own Eggs

We plan on hatching our own eggs next spring, but I have a lot of questions. First of all, how many eggs should we let the hen try to hatch (I heard that out of a few eggs, only a coulple hatched)? Also, how long will it take for her to hatch the eggs?

All chicken eggs incubate for 21 days. How many hatch depends on fertility and how well the eggs are incubated. Most full-sized hens can cover about a dozen eggs. And only hens that are broody will sit on and hatch out eggs.

I found with my Cochin hen that she was capable of sitting until she had about 10 babies and then she was so busy with the babies she didn't have time to sit anymore poor thing.
