We recently lost our male pekin duck, so I decided to put a few eggs in the incubator. Only one turned out to be fertile. About 2 weeks into this process my female went broody. Today is hatch day and I was wondering if anyone has brought the egg out to a broody duck so when it hatches she'll think it's hers. I see one crack in the egg, so either later today or tomorrow this little one should be out. Any thoughts on this?

If you slip the hatchling under the broody, do it from behind her, not from the front and be sure to check on it regularly. Broodiness is driven by hormones and sometimes things don’t go well if the hen hasn’t been sitting long enough. Be prepared to buy a single duckling as a friend just in case. In fact, I would go get a second duckling now and try to put both under mama at the same time. This way if she accepts them there’s not just one to grow up by itself.
