I have a first time mom whose eggs are starting to hatch and seen our big chickens running around and here they had one of the peeps is this common what do I do to prevent it?

Oh no, that's not a good thing! Block access to the broody's nest box immediately and when she's done hatching the chicks release her under supervision to make sure the rest of your flock don't attack her chicks. It's rare, but unfortunately this does happen sometimes.

Well now there is a chick and the mom was picking at it so we took it from her. We did this because she was broody and thought this would help now I'm going to have to do a seperate area for the chicks? They to not free range I need help does this happen or will she protect them once they r hatched

Thanks I've raised chicks the past two summers so I'm good with that it was just I thought she would take care of and protect the babies
