Hatching Shipped Coturnix Eggs

So...so far, day 7, we candled them today. 60% of them are alive and doing well. The rest are either dead (5 blood rings) or infertile/got too frozen on the journey here (no signs of development).

They came a day late, took a total of 3 and a half days to arrive at -25 weather. Pretty cold when we open them and left them get up to room temp for 15 hrs before setting them in the bators.

We are hoping that out of the 145 eggs developing right now will yield a 65% hatch rate. Low expectations at this point. At least this hatch should give us enough chicks to start off the season...

That sounds like a "good" percentage rate considering the shipping conditions. Hope you have a good hatch!!!

130 out of the 145 eggs made it to Day 7 (when we candled the first time) made it to lockdown today! That's 90% (well, 89.655, which I call 90). Going unexpectedly well so far if I may say so.

Summary:
  • 240 eggs arrived intact in -25C weather (took 3.5 days, 18 broken)
  • 145 made it to Day 7 (145/240 = 60%)
  • 130 made it to lockdown (130/145 = 90%)
  • TBA on actual hatch rate in 3~4 days

Then ones that did not make it to day 7...
Were they clears or quitters or both?

Final, Day 19 report (we are letting the rest, 34 or so I think, sit in the bator for another day before discarding them): we got a few early birds arrive on day 16, while most popped out on day 17~18.

90 hatched out out of the 130 made it to lockdown. 69%, isn't THAT bad all circumstances considered.

Purchased 240 eggs and got 90 chicks. We expected about 30 more but we will take 90.
