Thanks Tommygirl and Teila for the advice. I'm waiting for the local farmer to have enough fertile eggs to pick up. It will be a mix of ee and brown egg layers.

How many eggs should I put under her? A dozen?
Once hatched, if the chicks can't get back up to the nest, will Betty sleep on the floor, in a corner of the coop with the chicks?

Here's my coop set up. The floor of the coop is concrete covered by pine shavings. Thanks again for all the help!

Hi everyone,
Haven't posted much as I have been busy with my Yorke's we rescued.Having six of them has really been a challenge for sure, but worth every minute of it. I have been following along with this thread since the beginning.

Sorry about your loss Telia and 999. I understand how you feel and it is so weird that I had a loss yesterday also.

Something reached into the chain link fence and pulled one of my bantams thru, killed her and left only some skin and feathers. Sorry to be so graphic....This didn't happen in my big coop, it was by the little coop for the bantams. I had to separate the banties because we ended up with two roos and they almost killed each other.
It really hurts to lose one of these guys and I am sorry for both of you. I found a lot of comfort in going out to the coop today and making it a bit safer. If I have to build fort Knox I will. It is so good to have this thread to share our ups and downs. Telia do you remember we had broodys at the same time?
Take care everyone, we will all have new beginnings....
Marie

Do you have a dog crate? you can put it on the floor with her and the chicks after they hatch. They are pretty easy to find on CL. Your set up is nice! Other hens may try to lay in her nest box so be sure you mark the eggs that are supposed to be under her. I make a circle all around the center with a sharpie so it won't wear off. With a first timer you may want to limit her to 8. If others lay in with her she may not be able to cover them all. That happened here. The special eggs I wanted my girl to sit on were pushed out as other hens laid on top off her or took over the nest when she got up to eat and drink and she couldn't cover her eggs and theirs.

So exciting that you have a broody good luck hatching!!! Keep us posted...have you peaked in the eggs? Teila was good and didn't peak in her eggs at all last time...I candled 3 times which was good for me since I love seeing what is going on inside them.

I hope your light Sussex integrates well with the other chickens in your flock!

Welcome Back!

You've already had some great advice. My first hatch my chickies stayed with the flock. Momma hens become demon chickens when protecting their chickies I dont think you have to worry. The weather is warming up and my dumb chickens always went broody in the middle of winter so you have that on your side too!!! My nesting boxes where a little high too and I just added a lot of hay to the floor of the coop to make it less of a jump....Teila mentioned a ramp or a ladder and that is great advice.... you will be surprised how quickly they start hopping around and jumping in places you cant believe they are old enough to get to!
Quote: My first hatch I lost almost all my eggs when momma started running after the first two hatched chicks. My most recent hatch I followed this great advice and put her in a little broody coop and all 10 hatched. She never had to leave the nest to chase chicks and I had a much better hatch. Good luck and keep us posted!!!!!

I

Love your new girl TG!!!! Cant wait for you to get her home and get those chickies hatched.

I'm still minus one chickie.....But the other 9 are fine and getting bigger.

I'm going to get some updated picks today so maybe you guys can hep me figure out if I have any/how many roos. I'm pretty sure of a couple of them are but....really no,I'm not sure at all. I have no idea what I have here. lol

Teila....respectful of your request but ****hug******
