Hatching with 2 broodies

Quote: Great info on the wry-neck baby chick, Pooman. Watched the video... Amazing how quick it can be treated and corrected. How is your little chick doing? Hope all is well.

So happy you gor a chick 3 but sorry about chick 2...it's weird how that happens. my last hatch had 3 who just died in their shells they last day or two...I cracked em open and found perfectly formed babies one had even pipped internally but that was the end of it.

My little are almost 9 weeks old and I still can't tell if I have three boys or two boys and a girl.... grrrrr

I think I am winning the 'You Are Not Broody!' stakes but 'Sybil' (lol) continues to throw a curly one every so often. I get home from work and extract my puffed up, mildly aggressive feathered beach ball...
hahahahahahaha the best description of a broody hen EVER!!!

Ahhh the roller coaster...i didn't expect the constant rubbish.....

So Rocky, i dont know how he hurt himself, i think he had a fall trying to shag one of the girls in the morning. I dont know what is wrong with him. Cannot find a busted tendon, sore bits, swelling, cuts or scratches... Nothing, it all, looks and feels normal except he wont use his left leg.... Its caput... I have been stretching, massaging and moving his bung leg, after 3 days he seems to be applying a small amount of pressure, but seems he cannot extend his claw properly. I'm sad for the big boy, he turned out to be a total gentleman. Did i tell you how when i come home it (well used too...) it looks like the back yard has been raked, it's the bigboy scratching around finding goodies for the girls... You should have seen them sprint when he called them.
I'm giving him ample time to recover, but I think he will have to go into isolation as he tried a one legged shag yesterday which just ended up in feathers flying (not his...)

So in preparation for the worst the incubator has been set with the six fertile eggs we had from him, they will be pure orps, possibly straight buff, so I think I'll keep 3-4 roosters now for a little redundancy. I'm still hoping Rocky gets his dancing legs back though.

The Kiev's (formerly nuggets but new nuggets arrived so was getting confusing) both are doing well.. I think there is a boy and a girl, if so, they will both get names I'm thinking Charlotte and Rocky 2. He is kinda lucky Rocky bunged his leg.... Does it even out? So the reason i think we have a boy,, there is this handsome looking cluster of feathers poking vertically out of his bum.... And his nose is getting red and swelling. I'm sure he will be a beauty too.

Nugget batch 1 (including Wonky) All 4 are doing well, Mavis can be a broody anytime, she is very cooperative, much better than being attacked for looking in the chicks direction... But we loved you Dot, RIP. We dosed Wonky with vitE and a multivitamin with selenium, 3 times in a day and a half, and now he is all good. If he had been done upon hatching (we started after a day... I was away) i dont think you would know the difference. Since we were a little late, he is slightly smaller than the others but the gap is getting smaller

Nugget batch 2 just hatching, out of the incubator we put 2 dark barred plymouth rocks that hatched in 19.5 days flat... Remember to stagger incubator if you going to transfer... Incubators are faster.... Where was i, 2 hatched and healthy looking chicks and 2 unhatched eggs under Dotty, this goes with the other 4 potentially viable eggs. Maybe 8, but I'm doubtful on 2 from the last candling, so 6 would be awesome to end up with.. This is also going to be interesting as Dotty is in the main coop area where the Kiev's are, Mavis got moved to the secured area down the end, so,all the littlies are in the same house more or less. I'm sure Dotty is going to freak out the Kiev's if they come to close.

So the sadness, while still there, it makes me smile to see all the little ones growing, but I'm going to have to harden up when I comes time for dinner.

Take care girls

The Saga continues .......
I get home from work yesterday afternoon and Cilla is once again very comfy in the nest box, doing the "mine, mine, mine" thing! So being very careful not to hurt her because she has buried her head in the straw again, I extract her and encourage her to wander around the garden. Because Dusty has laid her egg, I am able to remove the nest box until bed time.
After telling all and sundry that would listen that she has been robbed and her nest box is missing Cilla proceeds to throw in a plot change .. if she can't have her nest box she is going to go to bed on her roost 2 hours early! She sulked there until sunset when I figured it would be OK to put the nesting box back because Dusty sleeps in it .. bzzzt, wrong! Turn my back and Cilla has dropped, stealth-like, into the nesting box. 5 times I put her back on the roost and eventually Dusty figured it was OK to go to bed .. bzzzt, also wrong! Went for a final check before I went inside and Cilla is sitting on Dusty in the nest box! lol Put her back on the roost and I am pretty sure she stayed there for the night but was back in the nest box this morning!

Hubby has money on Cilla winning!

Pooman .. if you need a feathered incubator for some of your eggs, I have one at just the right temperature!

Fingers crossed that Rocky is OK!!

Woo hooo Wonky!! Way to go little guy .. good news! :)

Hi Team!
Teila, breaking broodies is no joke. With all of my bantams, I had to block off the nest, and then physically remove them from the coop several times a day, and then put them on the roost after dark (they would be huddled next to the closed-off nest at all other times). It usually took about 10 days, but they would eventually break.

It's been a busy week in my world. I traveled down to Orange County for an oral argument on Tuesday, and then drove north of there to see my friend, Sarah, the one with the horrible brain cancer prognosis. It was wonderful to see her! One of those people in my life with whom the closeness I feel is in no way proportional to the amount of time I've spent with her - a truly great friend and as good a reason to hope for an afterlife as almost any (my mom tops that list, of course). She's hanging in there as well as can be expected and is just trying to figure out how best to spend these next few months, while still keeping things consistent for her teenage kids.

Anyway, I'm still pooped from the trip, two days later, which ended with waiting 1.5 hours in the cold in the airport parking lot for someone to unlock my car (whoops), but I did manage to get a few new shots of the flock. Since TG so kindly gave me the name Desi, I've decided to change Ida's name to Lucy. She's going to be a redhead, after all! I couldn't resist! And, it's not like Lucy didn't have to share Desi with the all the other ladies.

So, behold, Desi Arnaz Rooster and Lucille Bird at 9.5 weeks (and their shrinking mama Rousseau):

In the world of the aunties, Grace laid 3 days in a row before taking today off, and Bettina's molt is over and she's giving some squats! She is in her full fluffy splendor, and has recovered her bodacious booty:

The co-moms have shown no interest in weaning their big babies. They still stay close by inside and outside the coop. Frida and Lucy roost together at night and Rousseau and Desi still sleep in the nest. I'm thinking about forcing them onto the roost at night, though, because now that we're getting eggs again in the nest, they're getting poopy. It's just not fair to the rest of us! You think that'll work?

TGG, are you out there?? Any fluffy butt bubbie shots??

see below...we had a visitor today?

Bart was busy showing off today and Sweet Sassy was out and about. George is his usual bossy self. I could only only get one fuzzy butt picture and the little white one refused to come out from behind momma for a picture.
My chickens have taken to destryoing their coop....several times a day. Momma proceeds to knock over all the feeders, waterdishes, and makes a huge mess! I dont know if she is teaching them to scratch around or what.... but couldnt she do it OUTSIDE!!!
i put the littles feeders and water bowl in the nesting box. Maybe they will be more protected there. Tonight Bart was in the nesting box with Miss Milly? Sassy is sitting BEHIND the nesting box...the spot she has started laying since being booted out of the "favorite laying spot". but now, Moss Molly has moved them to the OTHER nesting box....No one, except George was on the roost???? what is going on? I'm so cofused...lol Sassy better not even THINK about going broody.
What would make them all stay off their roost???

Pooman I'm waiting for some good news on Rockies leg....hope he feels better very soon. What a sweet boy he seems to be. Good news on Wonky...glad your research paid off!!! Hope all the other nuggets have uneventful transitions
Liz. your babies are beatuful!!! Love the names. The red hed....Lucy very fitting

They are beautiful. Wow, Bettina has really filled in...she is georgous!!!!!

G'Day Team Broody

Yep Liz, broody-breaking is definitely a battle of wills and who knew that a feathered beach ball could be quite so determined!

Because Dusty uses the same nest box I have to leave it in while I am at work all day so I come home to Cilla bunkered down in it on Dusty's egg. I have been putting her out for a free range and locking her out of the coop until bed time. The nest box has to go back in because Dusty sleeps in it and Cilla gets to sit on my lap until dark and then I pop her on her roost. Of course, the next morning she is back on the nest. This weekend is going to be better because I can take the nest box away until Dusty wants it and they can free range all day, meaning I can lock Cilla out of the coop...wish me luck!

Again, such said news about your friend. One of those times when words are really not going to cut it. Everyone is in my thoughts xoxo

Desi Arnaz Rooster and Lucille Bird ... I love it!! He definitely looks like a rooster.
Way to go Grace! Bring on the eggs Bettina!

I think popping Rosseau and Desi on the roost of an evening is worth a try. Having said that, I tried it with Dusty when she first arrived but she was determined to sleep in the nest box and has always done so. Luckily she does not poop until the morning when she jumps out so I don't have the poopy egg problem. Tina and Suzi still sleep curled up in their little bed but I have seen them perch hopping just before bed time so they may be thinking of moving onto their silkie-friendly roost.

TGG, Cilla also took to coop destroying during the bubby teaching phase and I ended up building a timber 'platform' for their feed bowls. It was a block of timber with 'edging' on it so that the bowls sat in their spot and while Cilla & Co could still jump in them and scratch, they could not knock them over.

Yep, I sometimes wonder what my little family is up to .. I only have 4 but to cater to all their chickenalities I think I need 5 x coops and runs! lol

Lovely pictures everyone! Keep them coming!

PS. I want to see the white bubby .. lol :)

Syba (my 5 year old puddy cat) is a bit off-colour at the moment. I'm thinking the heat/humidity might be messing with him but I am keeping an eye on him and hoping that I do not need to take him to the Vet, he so hates that!

Tina and Suzi are venturing out a bit more now and I am hoping to get some pictures of everyone today .. free range is a bit tricky at the moment because Cilla is cranky and taking it out on all and sundry!
