Hatching with 2 broodies

Thanks Liz :)
I still have one more day off before I go back.
I know she will be fine, I am just not sure if the 'thing' I am seeing on the egg is damage or if it is hatching early....I have a picture; someone might know?

Oh gosh, I wish I knew! At this point, it seems best to sit and wait no matter what it is, unless a more-experienced person will tell you otherwise.
You got me thinking, though, about timing. Sounds like you're only a day and a half ahead of me - mine were laid earlier than yours, but were put under Frida about 2 days later (what with the time difference). So, it got me wondering if mine might be farther along than I had thought. I candled again tonight, and I think I may be down to just one good blue egg! :( I couldn't see any veins on the other one, which is a changed circumstance from before. There was no bad smell, which is positive, but the development did not look good. I think I saw some good development in the 4 marans, but it's still really hard to tell on the dark eggs.
Argh, why is this so hard!! Is the egg-to-chick ratio in nature really that bad?

Yep Liz .. I'm going with the wait and see option .. no bad smells, Cilla still sitting on them; have a Bourbon, sleep on it and see what tomorrow brings! :)
Wow, so you may be very close behind me .. that's good!
I didn't try the candle thing and it is probably too late now. I wouldn't really know what I was looking at anyway.
lol .. yep, it is definitely not the easiest thing I have done but then I think I am bringing a lot of it on myself .. wish I could stop worrying and thinking the worse; I guess I would so much like to see Cilla's hard work pay off!
If they do hatch and everything is OK, I am going to strut around telling everyone that I wasn't the slightest bit worried and it was easy as! lols :)

It looks like it may well be a pip. Most I've had start with a very small crack that looks almost like a little pyramid poking up but some looked like a bigger chip like yours. If its not a pip but is damaged there is nothing you can do anyway so the Bourbon is a good call. :) I hope to see fluffy chick pics tomorrow.

Oh- and as for late candling....get in a pitch black room. Find the air sac- the rest will just look dark because at this age the chick takes up most of it. Sit really still & watch for them to wiggle a bit.

Have you ever seen an egg hatch that did not have veins at day 13? I'm worried, because I couldn't see veins in the lighter area on one of my two blue eggs, which had veins there before. The other blue had plenty of veins. Neither egg smelled. On the one I'm worried about, the dark area looked like it had some differentiation inside (some fuzzy bits), but it was pretty different looking from the other blue egg, and from how it looked 2 days before.

No I haven't. Sorry. The majority of the egg should have the growing chick in it in the last week to days and veins shouldn't disappear.

Thanks Liz :)

looks like a pip and it is in the right end. just relax and feel excited that things may be happening. With my girls first hatch there was a chick who had one whole side of his egg smashed on about day 19. I could see that he was wiggling around so I just put him back in the nest box under his momma and he was the first to hatch the next morning. Good Luck!

Hmmmmm- off our original topic but I wonder if a rat is getting my eggs. No eggs today, 3 yesterday. There is a gap by the corner of the run fence and the coop to run door is always open. I just stuck a chunk of cement there to block it. We will see if we suddenly have eggs tomorrow.

Teila- any chicks?
