Hatching with 2 broodies

Liz, it is so very exciting. The holes are much bigger now and I can hear peeping!

I would never have believed that I would get this excited!

Hi Team Broody, I have been following along with you guys and can hardly stand the excitement myself! We have only had chickens for about a year now. We didnt have a rooster to fertilize the hens eggs so we have never had any hatch here. I cant wait for that day.

We have had our Jersey Giant go broody twice, the one time I bought fertilized eggs for her but nothing happened so we went to the feed store and bought her chicks. Took the eggs away that didnt hatch and put the babies under her at night and she immediately became the best Mom ever! The next time she went broody we just skipped the eggs and waited a couple of weeks and got her more babies, she did the same thing, loved them and took great care of them. She even raised them with all of our other hens and one rooster with no problems from the bigger ones. If anyone comes near them she lets them have it and they are all scared to death of big Momma Penny.

We have 2 roosters and 12 hens now. The roosters are just becoming adults.
Right around the same time Penny went broody my Buff Orp. Savanna decided to go broody with Penny. I waited until Penny had her new chicks about a week and then went and got some babies for Savanna. I am like you guys and think all that hard work of brooding should be rewarded. I was nervous but we did the same thing, waited until dark, took the eggs out she was sitting on and put the babies in. It worked with her also. So just thought I would share this just in case you ever have to get babies for your broodies! Again, go team Broodies!!!!!!

G'Day 16paws, nice to meet you! Your stories were very encouraging, thank you. I am going to try and leave Cilla and the bubs in with Dusty and Britney so as not to cause too much upheaval; a risk I know, but we will have to wait and see how it goes. Cilla has done such a wonderful job to date and I do hope she can defend them if necessary . . . I have a feeling she will. It is nice to know we have so many cheering for us from afar ... your next Liz! Team Broody rocks! Hopefully soon we will have some pictures to share

Thanks, Paws! What Teila said!
I'm nervous because my big Brahma, Bettina, apparently did have at least one accident with a crushed egg (and Grace can be a real bossy little hen), but I believe they are just as eager to have babies as the broodies, and I don't want to separate them. When the two non-broodies range, they don't go nearly as far from the nest as they used to and seem to want to get back quickly - maybe to see what's going on too! Tonight, they seem to be in the closest part of the roost to the nest where the broodies are, so I kinda think they're cheering the broodies on too!
Looking forward to some picks of fuzzy butts soon, Teila!
