Hatching with 2 broodies

OK here is the first batch.

Here is Beakface and all three babies

These next are of the little mutt I don't know. tail and back feathers and coloring say girl but look at the wattles. The comb is sorta prominent but yellow

These are the Silver Penciled Wyandotte that I believe to be a cockerel.

Pics of the third baby and the one I most strongly suspect to be a pullet are coming soon

I agree with your assessment, TG! We all know how little I know, but I agree that the feathering on the mutt and her shape looks like a pullet and the others look like cockerels. The comb on the mutt is bigger, but it's yellow, and pullets have yellow combs, according to that list I sent around before.

My two chicks at 5.5 weeks look more like the mutt than the wynadottes - pullet feathering and shape, with noticeable comb. One's comb is pink and she has pink wattles, the other's comb is yellow and she has no wattles yet.

It'll be interesting to see how they all shake out!

Aaaw TG, they are cute! That is a gorgeous picture of all of them .. looks like Beakface is telling them something very important :)
I agree, little Mutt = Rooster but we also know how much I know - very little! :) Besides my own, that is the first time I have made a prediction of gender.

I am now settled on 2 boys and 3 girls for my bubbies. I spent a wonderful couple of hours yesterday afternoon watching them and finding ways to identify them .. it is like identifying 5 x white pom poms!

Tina, my 'keeper' from Day 1, is still in the girl column!

Liz, I would luv to have seen those pictures also. I can't imagine Ida in the lemon tree .. I have not seen any of my adult girls higher than your average bench height. Cilla can't fly, Dusty probably could but doesn't and Britney was the same, probably could but didn't. Silkies can't fly but they sure can run and flap their wings! Tee hee

Teila hope you are right about Tina! as for the others hope they are ALL girls too

here are pics of baby three...

Input from the SPW thread is that SPW1 is a boy hoping this one is NOT!

Luv her expression in that last photo .. wouldn't you like to know what they are thinking; I sure would! :)
Note: I said 'her' .. for what it is worth (not much, lol) my prediction is girl and a very pretty one at that

I really can't tell, TG! I'm beginning to suspect that sexing chicks based on pictures alone is rarely certain!
I hung out with my bubbies for a good while today, and my assessments went something like this: pullet; hmm, cockerel; oh, that's a pullet; uh oh, looking awfully roosterlike; ad infinitum. I think I'm going to have to wait until I hear a crow or see some hackle feathers before I believe anything beyond what I want to believe. As of now, there are no typical rooster behavior signs, but with just 2, I don't have much of a comparison sample.

Teila, all my hens are fliers, and the bubbies are no exception. I'm not sure how this came to be - bantams are more natural fliers (which makes me wonder why yours don't fly), and I think they taught my Brahma, who is pretty hilarious to watch fly, but she will do it nonetheless. Rousseau, the frizzle, is the most flight-challenged, since her frizzle gene seems to have wrecked havoc on her wing feathers. Early on, I placed a 4 foot roost in the coop, overlooking the side yard/creek area, as sort of a challenge for them, and they all took it on in stride, and now it's one of their favorite hangout spots. So, it's very cute to watch them all fly over, babes included, from wherever they are in the yard, when I start shaking the scratch jar to bring them back to the coop.

Hey Liz

I don't know why Britney didn't, being a bantam Leghorn; maybe she took her lead from Cilla and Dusty. Cilla and Dusty both have feathered feet and I think this is a handicap with regards flight?

Hey girls,

I'm back from my job.. Part-time interstate truck drivers, im might have come past you Teila, went to Caloundra then Gympie, then inland and back home.

Teila your chicks are so big their looking awesome

Tommy those first couple just have that look dont they, the third doesnt :)

So yeah, I was... Still am, upset by the other day it was just a shock and I'm glad I took just a moment to assess the situation cause the snake was hard to pick out. There is a lesson in that, given we all have nice smelling things in our backyards.. When I came back with the spade the thing reared up and started hissing at me, but not for long.

About looking after them inside, not an option, missus works full time and im away randomly for days. Good news though Lola the new mum is smashing it, doing a great job, not the massively defensive bird like Dot was but doing all the right things. So thats great. I'll get some photos of the chicks sorted, they have grown heaps in the last few days

Hi ladies!! I just have to say you guys are an inspiration. I am so very new to this and when my hen became broody, and I'm so lacking in knowledge and experience I thought she was dead, or very sick. I asked my hubby to go in and get her out; he found out she was fine when she almost pecked a hole in his hand.
Doing my research I joined BYC to get advice and ask questions. (I had been reading...looking around for months now but never joined in) Anyway, I came upon ya'lls thread and spent last night reading. Ya'll did a great job of not only taking care of your girls, but also making it very educational. I actually think I may be able to do this now!!!
My Molly has been on her eggs 4 days now. She is one MAD momma and wont let me check the eggs, count, remove any new ones. I only have 2 hens and 2 roosters so I dont have a large number of eggs to remove but I have to get a plan as this is going to be a daily chore. Not sure what to do. I asked on my "introduction" thread and am waiting for advice. I tried last night to mark, count the eggs but she got so upset I was afraid she would hurt the eggs. I dont want to bother her but dang it, I gotta get Sassy's new eggs out! and I will have to check the eggs at times. Last night it wasnt quite dark so i guess I will try tonight when it is very dark? I put a red heat lamp in the coop because it is getting down in the 20's and she is all alone in her nesting box. The others can snuggle up together and I was afraid she would get too cold all by herself so the light might be keeping her up. Im so confused and worried. How do you guys do this for 3 weeks.
