Hatching with 2 broodies

The current residents of house broody. Goliath the moulty docile rooster, the 2 nuggets and Dotty hunkered down

Aaaw Pooman .. I luv these two! The way the little nugget is looking up at Goliath is so adorable! They have had such a tough time of it, the poor little cuties!

I wasn't worried he was psycho (though Teila perhaps rightly suggested that I should be). I just don't like the idea of some guy using his perceived constructional-superiority to try to pick up ladies at the home depot. Of course, I fully admit that I may be unjustly reading all of that into what was a harmless attempt at being friendly in an all too-cold world.

Oh no Liz! I hope I didn't plant that seed of thought! I was having a joke about getting him to help even if he wasn't your type but then if it didn't work out he knew where you lived. I was kidding, that would be mean. He is probably a very nice guy who was trying to strike up a conversation with a lovely lady! I'm stopping now before I dig myself deeper! lol

We had lots of rain today and I fully expected to come home to two half drowned silkie chicks in need of a good chamois before bed .. wrong! I came home to 2 fluffy, dry bubbies who obviously had worked out how to get out of the rain. Hubby informs me that when he went out to check they were huddled in the ranch. After the last episode when all 5 of them were dripping, looks like of the 5, I kept the smart ones! lol

This is great! Let us know how it goes and send more pics. The others are fantastic!

Alrighty, while we're waiting for new fuzzy butt photos, I will entertain with a funny story:
I went to the home depot to buy materials for the new run. Some guy bumps me with his cart, apologizes, and I accept and I'm on my way to the fencing isle. He sees me there and asks me if everything is ok. Now, he does not work there (obviously, because urban home depot guys don't actually ask you if you need help, you have to hunt them down), and he's NOT my type, but he decides he's going to throw some manly construction wisdom my way. I say a non-committal yes and keep looking at the fencing materials and he says, "are you building something for your chickens?" I say, "why yes, I am building them a run." And he says, "I'm into that." I ignore him and he eventually moves on.

I don't know if I was more shocked that some guy was trying to pick me up at the home depot or that he targeted me as a chicken lady! Maybe I should have been a bit more open to the come-on, given the common ground, but he went about it all wrong! And again, he wasn't my type. ;)

This made me laugh! Maybe you had shoe poo? "I'm into that."?? hahaha...He could have been way smoother. "Oh yeah...how many chickens?" "How long have you been keeping them?" conversational and not borderline creepy. He needs a coach.

Quote: The two little orphans are adorable. I love that pic with the two of them and the rooster. He is looking at them like he doesnt quite know what to make of them. haha. I'm glad he is being a good "big brother". Poor little guys..hopefully girls

The stores have finally restocked their shelves and the boys went back to school today. Life is getting back to normal. And Teila, I have looked for a breadmaker. You are so right. I loved mine. I was so nice,,made nice big loaves but I think it may have been damaged when me moved. It stopped working? They used to be popular and you could find them everywhere but not so now. I was hoping I would see some, with it being Christmas and what a good gift that would make...to myself. Still no luck. I may have to try and track one down on the internet.

No luck for pictures of bubbies. I havent even seen them yet!!! I went in yesterday morning and heard the chirp. Yesterday evening I went out and put a thick layer of hay down in the coop. I'm kind of worried as the nesting box is a few inches off the ground. If the chicks hop out I'm afraid they wont be able to get back in with mom??? So, I put down a thick...thick layer of hay in hopes of raising the floor up to the level of the nesting boxes. I hope I dont make things worse....I dont want to lose a chick in 6 inches of hay.... I saw broken egg shells and tried to take them out and got a peck for my trouble. I went to the feed store this morning and got some chick starter and a little water bowl and put it at the far end of the nesting box. But I'm running out of room.... Maybe I should put mom and the chicks in the other nesting box??? She is in the favorite spot and I often find my other girl sitting on poor Miss Mollys head. I'm kind of worried what she is going to do as they get bigger and start moving around ..... I'm SO in over my head with all this. lol

Don't worry, we've all been there!
Are you hearing chirps now when you go out there? They should be peeping pretty constantly, unless they're sleeping. If you're not hearing anything at all, then I'd be worried and would investigate.
I was also worried about chicks falling, even though my nest wasn't very far off the ground. I put up a little wire barrier. Can you do that? Or a little board or something? I also put eggs in the other nest, so that the other hens would lay there, and that all worked very well.
Good luck!!

Oooh, this is so exciting TGG .. Chirps? YES!

I don't think you will lose a chick in the hay. I was amazed at how quickly the little guys could run over hay/straw without getting all tangled up in it; I guess they do not weigh very much :) I reckon that pretty soon they will be running up and down their hay-ramp and it is a nice soft landing spot!

Hang in there .. you are doing great and Miss Molly and the girls will let you know what they want and when .. they will definitely help you with your decision making :)

It must be killing you not getting a look at them yet? It's killing me! lolz

I just saw a little fluffy yellow poking its head out lol, couldn't get a picture though, it was only for a moment, I think there are at least 2...

3 nuggets confirmed, pictures on the way, quite different colours happening this time, same parents as the other nuggets growing now... Exciting
