Hatching with 2 broodies

Liz, My girls are 23 1/2 weeks. The EEs have been squatting, but I did not expect anything from them for quite a while. What an awesome surprise this morning! Clarabelle was the only other chicken to lay and egg today. I guess this super cold weather is bothering them a bit. Speaking of eggs and dog food… my son wanted to eat the blue egg, so I fixed it for him. I saved the shell on the counter so we could look at it some more. I went downstairs to load the fire and forgot about it. I got home from PT and it was gone! Only one creature could be responsible for this…

Also, I randomly bought a vintage egg scale from Etsy today. It may or may not work… either way I think it will be fun in the kitchen. I kinda like the old patina on it… I prefer it to something restored. :fl those Brady girls get that egg laying started! No freeloaders!! I also already have an egg "customer!" One of my Husband's coworkers wants 2 dozen a week! Yahoo!!

Yay, crops have completely gone down. All is normal. I fed the guts faces a bowl of fermented chick starter and I'll see how they fill up.

On the note of egg eating animals, came home to zero eggs yesterday..... Well Jess looked quite guilty when i checked the nest.. We have been getting a minimum of 2 and upto to 4 per day. So Jess hasn't gone hungry eating eggs and picking nectarines off the tree

Hi guys! wanted to let you know that I am going to be a chickie grandma....one of the chicks...a buff orp mutt... I hatched last spring is sitting on eggs! I am going to candle them and if they are clear I will give her some fertiles from my girls. I hatched her for my aunt who lives right behind me so she is not my pullet but I am looking forward to the hatch

They are at about day 10 or so.

My 3 boys are growing like weeds. I will process the mutt in early March or so and the Wys at the end of April. I am not looking forward to it but I want to get it behind me. I want to wean us off of food we don't know the origins of and this is an unpleasant reality of that.

Also getting 1/2 a steer and a 7 cu ft freezer next month. He has been raised by my friend who sells me her Delaware culls. She also raises heritage guinea hogs so I can get pork from her as well. These are animals that have been raised in wide open spaces. She also pays extra to have them humanely butchered so I can feel pretty good about that too.

Don't mean to offend any vegetarians we might have here.

Congrats on the eggs and the integration and the pollywogs. Sorry about the goldfish. Here is hoping that Tina and Suzi are really pullets.

Good girl,

The tough reality that youll no longer be farming the killing out to other people. Once my numbers are up, I'll be bringing in an Indian Game (Cornish) Rooster and hopefully creating some faster growing chickens for the same purpose. I can get sheep from farmers i work for but probabily wont be doing that. I'll just pay the extra for free ranged animals. Apart from chooks eventually.

No offence here, i now firmly believe that if you cant do some of it you shouldn't be a meat eater. Full support from me. Dont give them names lol...

As a long-time vegetarian, I can say I'm not offended, but I also don't love hearing about it. It's a little like hearing about someone's aunt in the freezer. I agree with PM that if you're going to eat meat, you should be able to do the dirty work yourself, and I definitely support people raising their own animals for that purpose as opposed to having others factory farm them behind closed doors. When Stella was killed, I felt better giving her body to the family who had sold her to me, rather than burying her. Still, I'd rather not hear too much about the process of it, since I am a bit sensitive in that way.

Changing the subject and lifting the mood a little ... guess who is Broody again?

Secondly ... guess what I did?!! Hint: they arrive via Express Post next week!!

Tee hee; yep ... here we go again and while I ummmmed and aaaaahd over the decision; now I have made it; very excited!! :)

The mood wasn't lowered was it? Its a great thing, but i understand there is no need to go into the gritty details here, other threads devoted to that.

Eggciting news... What sort of chicks are you getting Teila? More Silkies? Make sure you let them sit for a day after they arrive before you put them under.

So the Poussin are funny, they just roam wherever they want, being quite agile they can get out of anywhere. Found Bluey (the one with blue legs) in with Dotty and her chicks earlier today. To my surprise Dotty wasn't maiming her.

One of Mavis' nuggets is defanitly a Roo, the comb is developing so fast he really stands out.

Rocky has been confined to a small coop for a few days now, he was getting quite active chasing the girls about, but i dont think it was helping him recover, so in by himself. He seems to be improving too with less activity. I think I'll keep him locked up for another few weeks with just small periods to stretch his legs. So hope he gets better and can do the job again.

Got some local kids coming over later with dad too, so they can feed the chooks and the cats while were both away for a few days this weekend... So hopefully that all works out.

Yay!! What eggs did you order?

Nah, PM, I don't think the mood was really lowered ... just seemed like a happier subject; well for me anyway! lol

Enjoy your weekend away :)

I ordered some Pekin Bantam mutts! lol
Bit of this, bit of that, pet quality only but I am hoping to maybe get a brown-Cilla out of the exercise.
I have a plan, I am hoping that I get one girl I am hooked on. Hopefully I will know she is a girl before I find out about one of the Silkies maybe being a rooster. That way, I can bond the mutt with the Silkies and if a Silkie does have to go; the remaining one may not be quite so lonely. Having said that, since Cilla has gone super-cranky on everyone again, Dusty and the bubs seem to be getting along a little better; safety in numbers lol.

Unfortunately, I could only order 1 dozen; she will not be able to cope with 12 eggs, she is too small so I am going to have to do some picking and choosing. A bit sad about that but I don't think I have another option.

Currently she is happily sitting on a non-fertile egg Dusty laid with a smiley face drawn on it!
