I am first time hatcher but am throughly satisfied with my hatch...today is day 21 and 23 of 41 eggs in egg cartons have hatched.. taken the chicks out and they are eating - drinking -sleeping under a heat lamp (Just like at the Riviera) the other 18 are still in the incubator and 2 have started to pip...Used LG incubator with auto turner/fan...the incubator will be so easy to CLEAN...all mess (most) went into the egg in carton...chicks had no trouble breaking through...any way I will do it again (in about 5 days after this is done Ha)...My game hen just went broody today - will give the collected eggs to her...!!! Now have 2 broody hens in our flock...they are great to have ..
I've done a few hatch's this way and will continue to do so , less of a mess , and the best part ! the hatched chicks don't play soccer with the remaining eggs ! The seem to hatch better and have no problems getting out .Works for me .
I think this may be the best way to go, we had one egg drown when the chicks knocked over one egg that was pipping, and it died. You will get lots of responses to this question, and I am still on the fence. The only problem with pulling new chicks from the bator (to avoid the soccer game) is the reduction of humidity to the rest of the eggs when it is opened. Looking forward to more opinions!
I was really woried about trying it the first time. Another BYC'er advised me it might be helpful when your humidity had been too high day 1-18. I had 11 out of 12 shipped eggs hatch in the carton. I don't know if it made a difference with the humidity issue but it did not hurt and no mess! I am sold on it. I have 36 eggs in cartons in lockdown right now.
