This is probably a stupid question, but has anybody ever hatched eggs without an incubator, either the electric kind or the feathered kind? I mean, for instance, using a heated room/box that isn't sealed or temp. regulated. I think the temp needs to be at around 100 F. with 60% (or so) humidity, but if you were able to do that over the required incubating time, could you hatch an egg? Just curious, 'cause I'm thinking of giving it a shot. What have I got to lose except a few eggs

Any environment that maintains a steady 100 degree temp and 50-60% humidity is likely to hatch some chicks. Heating a room to those temps seems a bit of a challenge from an energy standpoint, any box that is regulated to get to those temps and humidity is an incubator by definition.

What is more important, the temp or the humidity? I was thinking of (in the bathroom) using a small box with a heating pad (which is what I use for baby chicks) and damp towels, along with a small space heater (also used for chicks). They get rotated 4 times a day for 18 days? I'm gonna give it a shot.

What is with the fascination with finding the weirdest hatching environment possible to hatch chicks? Find a way to get temp and humidity stable at well documented levels and hatch away.

I cant imagine keeping an entire room (bathroom) at a consistent temp and humidity. Build a little box use a cooler put a temp control in it and help yourself to a hatch.

Wouldnt it be cheaper to just go to your local walmart or hardware store and buy 20 to 30 dollars of material to make a basic incubator in stead of paying your local engery company for all of the extra power that its going to take to run a space heater? Not to mention wet towels and or humidty isnt really to safe of a combination with a space heater. Your can buy a still air bator that will do the job just fine for $50.00, and it wouldnt kill you or burn your house down.

I built an inubator out of an old cooler, check it out on my BYC page. or anywhere under the inubator section of BYC

That would be what is known as an incubator. Not a very effective one, but one none the less. Please remember that you are taking responsibility for the lives of animals by doing this, please think it through carefuly.

Not to mention the fact that yes bathrooms are made to withstand humidity, but 3 weeks of constant 60% humidity can't be good for your walls, you will probably get some serious mildew/mold issues. And as Daidohead said, please keep in mind that you are toying with animal lives, you could get these babies all the way ready to hatch, but then have them drown or suffocate in shell because the humidity wasn't properly regulated. Just make sure you have the conditions needed before jumping in head first.
