To break broodies, (we breed silkies so have a lot of them) we have a metal dog kennel we put them in with just a narrow board for a perch. Set the kennel on something so air comes in from below. Attach the feeder and waterer to the sides so she can't tip them over. Four days and done usually!

Hi there! Yes, my Penny gets removed completely from the coop and she gets to go into (what I’ve renamed as Penny Jail). It’s a small dog crate inside my goats shed and it has her own food and water in the crate. She HATES it when she has to go to jail, however, as many times as she’s been there, she continues to get broody, so back to jail it is for her lol. Usually it takes 2-3 days for her and she’s over it. The first time I put her in there, I was new at it and thought she was just going to have to live in there all by herself because it took 5 days to break her.

I’ve been doing this for 3 years. Many were hatched by my ridiculously broody hen, I accidentally acquired a few from tractor supply as well. But, I swear, it was mostly my hen hatching babies. I’d rather the mama chicken hatch and take care of the babies. It’s survival of the fittest around my house, so when she hatches them, she’s fiercely protective over them, and that’s a good thing.

I have my first broody going now. I'm very excited to see little mama hen.
