Hate Selling a Horse!

The hard part is so many people would give the shirt off of their back to help an animal.. and bad people take advantage of it :O)

All of this to then dive into a story about how she plans - in two years - to open a therapeudic riding stable and is collecting full and half drafts to carry obese disabled people

MAN! she must have some TALL sidewalkers to handle that....if I know my horse breeds..draft horses and heck, even part drafts are rather tall some 16 to 18 hands! Yipes and have a rider fall off of that one I would like to know who the daddy is of her insurance company! Are you kidding me?

Now, tell me, jut how does she plan to help these disabled people that are on the heavy side get on one of those creatures....? Gotta be a team of basketball players! Well, guess anything is possible...

I'm with a physical challenge, to the point of obese and I will not get on anything that is 16 hands.....to say none the least one that will not gait.....

I'm not bashing her program...just it seems a bit odd to me!

Like the DH says - GROUND HARD!!! INSURANCE HARDER....UGH!

EGGCENTRIC...um,

that was not a "generalized" statement on all rescues.....it is some. They are and unfortunately splattered across the Internet dirty as can be and pathetic. These predators prey on people with problems.(and no, no offense taken!) We all just need to be savy.

I kind of wonder what happens to these horses at the rescues that cannot be placed and like you say, there is a waiting list.

Perhaps if there was another way to help the people who are HAVING to give up there animals that would allow them to keep them and give them the care they need, maybe we would see less animals going the way of any shelter or rescue. Kripes sake, this countyr has a food stamp program for those in need...maybe something like that is what these people need. Man now wouldn't that be something.

As for a legitimate rescue, it should have a non-profit tax status...ASK for the number or to see their form. They should not be offended by this.

Same on places for donations.....they should have the nonprofit number. Those donating be it cash or kind will want to have a reciept for tax deductions and likewise those taking in the donations need a record to claim it... UNCLE SAM gets a tad miffed if it is not matching when they audit.

Therapuetic or hippotheraphy programs... same thing....There are places that the programs can be registered with...I thind the American Handicapped Riders or something like that is one place...I am not sure exactly on that name. These programs do not happenover night and take superb planning to get them going and yep, they function on donations and fundraisings too.

They have to jump through hoops to get the status and the form is long. Least as it is in our state. That one I do know. When in doubt, check it out.

I would be leary of giving a donation to anyone unless I knew for sure it was legit. Sorry, but I am just sceptical on a lot of things and have seen one too many scams.

Beside that money can be to danged tight just to toss it.

But getting back to the topic of 'hate to sell a horse'....yep, it can be utterly frustrating and many of us do want good homes for our beasts....and it is hard not to be sentamental over it. To many of us, our horses are our companions and they have a deep part of our lives tied up and mind you that does not include the pocketbook! It is hard to part with a friend who you spend hours with that does not care about your troubles, but listens to you no matter what the muck you are in and all they want is some decent care in return.

I think breeders especially can run into a lot of trouble. It's like this, raising horses (or any animals) is like a bake sale...you just never know how many to make or what goodies will sell. Some years you have too many, others you have not enough and it is a vicious cycle. Then the hay is short, the farrier breaks his leg, your favorite vet moves, the stallion gets kicked by a mare and the hubby has lost his job or some other disaster. But when its good, it is really good. Yep, food stamps for pet owners that go strickly to get hay, feed and care... man what a terrific program...sheesh! and some people laugh.

Just becasue people fall on hard times, why should they have to give up their animals.. after all, some of us don't have children and well.. need I say more!
