If you are or would like to become a chicken owner and live in Hattiesburg, MS, let's talk. Let's talk about the City Ordinance that does not state whether or not chickens are legal in the city.

Let's talk about whether we should put forth efforts to make it clearly LEGAL to own chickens in our city or just 'coop' it to ourselves. Let's talk about the fact that there is more than one establishment that sells baby chicks within our city limits. And finally, why Animal Control seems to think that chickens are illegal in our city, as I have been visited by them twice myself and both times asked them to state the ordinance in which I was in violation and on both occasions they failed to produce.

Let's talk.

I am a chicken owner and I live in hattiesburg. I looked in the
Ordinance before I got my chickens several years ago and there is nothing
That would prohibit chickens in it. I called animal control once when I had
A stray dog break into my coop and kill most of my chickens. If I had been
Out in the country I would have just shot the stray, but being in the city I called
Animal control and was told you couldn't keep chickens because "they were
Livestock" and you couldn't keep livestock in the city. But like I said the ordinance
Says nothing prohibiting chicken keeping so I got more to replace
The hens I lost and have not had a visit or any problems from animal control
Yet.
I'm with ya on making it clearer or at least education of animal control folks
On how the law works. Everything is legal unless there is a law stating that it is
Illegal

My chickens flew over to my neighbors' yard and someone called the animal control on her and they got my chickens. I have called next day and they told me that I can't have them in the city limits because "they are Livestock". I can't find any law about it.

Let me make it clear. When law enforcement cites you for a violation, they have to state the law or ordinance in which you are in violation. If you have ever gotten a speeding ticket, the ticket will have a violation code that goes with the law you broke. You Must stand your ground and ask what code you are in violation of. Go online and print out the city code and keep it handy. Too many good people are being intimidated by animal ctrl for no reason. It has to stop! STAND YOUR GROUND!

I am trying to find hatcheries or someone with juvenile layers. Specifically Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Rocks and Buffs, but will consider other breeds. email [email protected] if anyone knows where I can find these!
