Hi all,

Got an 18month old Maren who we noticed had a bleeding foot, unrelated as she had just pulled a feather higher up her leg. But when we picked her up for a closer look noticed the foot pad was swollen and had the black spot, looking around here it seems to be bumble foot?

We have soaked in epsom salt water and put some antiseptic on it and covered. Will probably take her to the vet but they don’t open for another 5 days where we live, do we have to try the home surgery or is there anything else we can do to help for the next week?

High summer here in Australia, usually they are in the run all day with a couple hours free range in the afternoon. This has extended to most of the day at the moment since we are home for holidays.

There are many different approaches to treatment of bumblefoot. I usually don’t do surgery unless the chicken has a swollen foot pad and a scab, and is limping. Some people use Epsom salts soaks daily for a few days, and you can also use an Epsom salts plaster. Some use drawing salves, such as Prid or ichthamol, or a sugar paste dressing made with iodine for a few days. Then the scab may be more easily removed, and then the solid core can be pressed out. Here is an article that might help:
