Have you ever bought a foal from a breeder far from home? UPDATE PG 2

My dream is to own a Friesian in about five years.

Knowing how expensive they are (even before you posted the $ amount you paid), I don't think it's unreasonable to have regular updates on the status of your horse. I would want information at least once a month.

I agree with everyone else that the situation sounds very odd and you need real information from the breeder. Personally, I would probably send a certified letter to the new address. In that letter, I would politely demand that the terms of the contract be fulfilled, and I would notify him/her that if they're not, I will be taking civil action to terminate the contract because the seller has breached the contract and refuses to abide by the contract.

You need this stuff in writing - don't rely on phone calls.

We are large breeding facility, and ALL of our clients receive periodic photos of their foals and as many updates as they want. We have two farms and nearly 100 mares and I am always available to talk to my owners. Nearly all of our clients are absentee owners and rely on our ability to communicate with them. Some owners have spent $300K on their stud fees and some have spent $3K, but they are entitled to as much of our time as they need.

The dead foal should have had a post-mortem, no if, ands or buts...who was the attending vet? Is your foal insured? That's easy protection. I would also be inclined to show up unannounced. I would also have an equine attorney start looking at your contract.

PM if I can help you.

I am so exhausted from all this. I really just dont know what to think. iam going to put in the bulk of an email I was writing to the dead foal's owner, so I don thave to retype everything.. Fynn is the dead foal, Eowyn is my foal. "LA" is the breeder.

I am really just sick over all this. Its unreal. I had no idea that this is how breeders are. I am not a big fan of most "horse people" anyway, because they seem to be so detached from reality and people skills, but this probably takes the cake. I think I even like my old instructor who tied me to her blind flighty gelding better at the moment...

*sigh*

I DO have insurance on my foal. At the moment I just have no way to ge ther home (my dad bailed on me) and no place to put her (his closing fell through on the farm, and my in laws bailed on me)

Yes I did change it... lol. Thanks for noticing. My neighbor asked me for some of those "chicken fruits" a while back, and the new name for eggs made me laugh so hard Ihad to put it to good use.

Wow, she does not sound like a very good horsewoman/horse breeder from all that, IMO. Anyone who would call you up and basically tell you 'what the deal is' in that manner isn't practicing good business skills. She should have comforted you and understood your concerns and wanted to ensure you feel good about this transaction...ESPECIALLY after the amount of $ you have put into this foal! I myself, have never spent that kind of money on a foal and the ones I have purchased for around a thousand dollars, the breeders were extra helpful and always happy to help out with updates, emails, pictures and all of that stuff. Your breeder should be concerned about her reputation as a breeder and for that reason alone make sure you are happy as a buyer. You don't owe her anything for getting updates. That is a courtesy but still a courtesy that is owed to you IMO for doing business with her. It is called good business practice - something she is lacking apparently.

As a big breeder she should find out what the cause of the other foals death was for sure.

I am just so sorry to hear all of this. I remember how utterly excited and happy you were about getting this baby. I am so bummed out for you!!!! Just don't give up! I would ride it out and get my foal and then NEVER deal with that woman again!! Don't recommend her either.

What state is the foal in? Do you have enough room on your property for her? If not, you could look into renting a pasture for her close by. Here, it is pretty cheap just to rent a pasture...like 25$ a month per horse, if you can find one available. There are horse shipping services that will pick her up and driver her to you. Possibly find a good BYC member that is close to the foals location and have them house her for you until you can get her and a place for her. I would want to get her out of there asap.

I would be happy to do anything to help you with her if I were close to you. I am just heartbroken for you on this deal. I can imagine how frustrated you are....I hope it all works out for you in the end!

my foal is in Ann Arbor MI, and I am in upstate NY. I cannot even begin to express how hopeless I am in finding her a place to live. My parents were supposed to have closed on a farm in May, but it fell through, so did the closing for this month, apparently, we're still waiting to hear. My inlaws cant let me put her there, and we're on a small village lot.

I was set up to board at a retired trakehner breeder/trainer's summer home in our area, but she bailed out on me because she's older and not feeling well or wanting to deal with the risks involved with boarding.

I've called every single boarding facility withing a daily commute range and no one will take a weanling, and those that will want close to 400 bucks or more. I even went to far as to write letters to neighbors with property/horses/fencing and knock on random doors but NO ONE would get back to me or anything.

This has just been the worst series of events ever. I just keep holding to the hope that I wasnt mad when i prayed this thing through in the beginning and that some how it will all work out. But honestly I feel like my faith is just rocked to the very core and I just cant make it.

I posted an ad on craigslist, another one, begging for anyone in my area who has a field and might be interested to barter or allow for some cheap rough board- just some where to put her and we'd do the rest.

It just all seems so hopeless.

If I spent that much money, I would definitely want updates. If I were selling something that cost that much, I would def. give updates and lots of pictures.

This is a business to them and nothing more.

I don't think all horse people are like that though, you just happen to find one like that. Seymore sounds very compassionate about her facility.

I sold several horses, (not in that price range of course) but even someone buying a $700-1000 horse, got tons of photos. I would hate for someone to drive a long distance and not see what they were expecting.

I would go down and pick my foal up, if it were me. I would put her in my back yard if I had to. Yes, I have had one in my back yard (she was a rescue, so had to isolate her from the others) She loved to stick her head in the dining room window for her treats.

I hope you can find a place to put her. That is a lot of money invested.

I do hope this all works out for you.

This lady seems like the equivalent to a puppy mill owner.

I would get the foal out of her posession as soon as you can. I agree, if you cannot get it hauled right away, contact another boarding facility or a BYC member that can remove it asap for you.

Has the foal been wormed?
