Have you ever bought a foal from a breeder far from home? UPDATE PG 2

Yes, put it out here on BYC. Surely there is someone close to you or the foal that could help you with her until you get a permanent place for her.

I wish I were closer, I would go pick her up and keep her for you for just her food costs....hopefully someone on here will help you out...or somewhere.

Oh, I forgot to ask - Why would they wean her earlier than the 4 months? They should be letting the foal nurse until you pick her up....did they sell the dam?

This lady seems like the equivalent to a puppy mill owner.

I would get the foal out of her posession as soon as you can. I agree, if you cannot get it hauled right away, contact another boarding facility or a BYC member that can remove it asap for you.

Has the foal been wormed?

She's seen the vet and is up to date on everything from what i was told when I opened the insurance policy on her... I dont know though how she stands on wormings and such. I've asked her a couple times what she'l lbe due for this fall when I get her, but I never got answers to those questions.

I am seriously considering just walking away from it all and swallowing a 7500 dollar loss before I lose anything more trying to get her home and housed. Nothing seems to be coming together. The other foal owner seemed odd in her reply to my email... Where before we were both equally concerned about our treatment and how we were being dealt with and sharing our experiences with the breeder so we'd have a bigger picture on her, now she doesnt seem to want to discuss it. We had talked at one point about her hauling my filly to her place for me to come get, she's about 5 hours from me- but it seems like maybe she's wanting to pull away to avoid upsetting the breeder maybe? I dunno, the breeder offered her the other filly born this year as a replacement for her colt- which is an amazing offer on the breeders part, that filly is from an unbroken stam line, worth way more than our foals.

Transporting her looks like it'll cost about 400 bucks, which is probably doable between now and then so long as I dont have to come up with a bunch for housing. But if we have to put up shelter and fencing some where I dont know how we'd do that.

I wish she was older and trainable so I could free lease her out. As scary as that thought is at least it would be a viable solution where there seem to be none.

I was told she would remain on her dam until I picked her up, it was an expressed concern of mine. I wanted to make sure she'd have that comfort and health benefits for as long as was possible- I even considered paying to board her an extra month so she could stay on the dam until she was closer to 6 months.

I have no earthly idea why she's weaned at just 3 months. I was just informed last night, news to me. i imagine she's bred her back again, maybe she just didnt want to tax the mare anymore. The only update i got in all this was in June and she mentioned that she had to feed her mare extra because my filly was really taking a lot out of her. That was when she was barely 2 months old.

I am not a big fan of "horse people" anyway, because they seem to be so detached from reality and people skills, but this probably takes the cake. I think I even like my old instructor who tied me to her blind flighty gelding better at the moment...

UM excuse me if I get overly rude but im a big time horse person and alot of my friends are. We ARE NOT detached from reality or anything like that. Plenty of people ride blind horses and due fine. Its just the ersonality of this person in general, NOT the fact that she is a horse person!!! But yes get the foal out ASAP im gonna guess this woman doesnt give a crud.

I would be concerned about that too. I recommend leaving a foal on a dam for at elast 6 months. I have a foal that is taking alot out of my mare right now and even with bumping up her feed, it still shows. I wouldn't dare consider taking the foal off her mom yet though because I want the foal to be as healthy as possible and the mare can recover fast once the foal is weaned...alot faster than you can get an undernourished foal back up to standards...that is another 'red flag' for that breeder IMO.

No, No, No, don't give up on your Eowyn! Once it all works out in the end, you will be so happy and it will have all been worth it. Just keep trying. A lease is a great idea! It would be easier if she was of age to be worked but you still might find someone who would take her on one. We start our foals at birth with the imprinting process and doing daily GW and daily handling of the foals so that when they are of age to be ridden they are alot more easier to work with and train...so, it still may be possible to free lease her out for someone to do that. I would put that option out there definatly.

I was really surprised to hear she was weaned already. I really didnt know what to think, maybe she just said that because she was angry- thats what i've been secretly hoping. I mean, I lose a great deal of weight and nutrients when I nurse, but thats what my body is made to do, and it recovers easily- I would expect the same for a horse who's equally as well designed to nurse a foal.

I didnt try posting a free lease for her... I think I might try that.

I'll go back and fix that to read "most" horse people. Thanks for pointing it out. I think I must just have 26 years of being in the wrong section of the industry where I have little luck finding or dealing with the sane ones.

Flighty and blind is quite a different ride for a school age child than a blind grounded horse, too, you know. I ended up spraining my knee from one of those sessions.

Just the fact that there's decent functional compassionate people that exist at all is a greater comfort than you can even imagine.
