Have you ever had a chicken freeze to death?

I've left mine inside the past two days and will continue until this weekend when we're supposed to get up to the thirtys. We have a wind chill warning the next two days.

I lost 2 Seabright the last ice blast we had. They bolted out the coop door when I went in. It was late and dark and could not find them. Next morning the where frozen to death under the coop.

I did lose one young mille fleur d'Uccle, not frozen, but complications after his near-death experience from being too cold.

Happened overnight. He got pushed out of the huddle, wound up on the cold floor, and just couldn't generate enough heat to keep himselft warm.

I feel so bad for those of you that have lost a chicken to the freezing weather. I just wanted to get a feel for how common it is, and what the circumstances were when it happened. My girls got through last winter just fine, they were a bit grouchy but healthy. I've got my fingers crossed for the next few nights (-10F tonight, -20F tomorrow, then -10 again I think). It wouldn't be so bad if two of mine weren't molting!

I hope I never do.
I wonder if it would be a wise thing to put my silkies in a cardboard box tonight? They get shuffled around by the bigger birds and sometimes get pushed over in the corner by themselves. (they are almost 6 months old) This way they could all (4) huddle together to keep warm.

-20 is scary. What part of the country is that?

In a very cold valley in Vermont. I don't recall it ever getting that cold last winter. It sounds like a lot of people are dealing with a cold beyond their normal cold temps this time of year. I just hope this cold snap ends soon!

I haven't lost one yet but darn if I don't fret over them all the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do have a hen that is blind on one side (injury) and I always check to make sure she has made it to the coop safe and sound before I lock up.
