It actually is fairly common for people to sell horses they are leasing, or to sell a horse that is in for training and tell the owner it died, there are other tricks as well.
This is one of the reasons people have a trainer or leaser come to their own barn, and ride under their supervision, and in general, don't send horses out to be trained.
And put up and lock their gates on their drive.
And get motion detectors, don't leave their property unsupervised, microchip their horses, set up their property so the barn is not visible from the road, put locks on their trucks and trailers, AND, don't discuss their horses breeding or training on bulletin boards, post their location(even state), name or put pictures of their horses up on the internet.....
