I have been posting in another thread but decided it was time to make my own thread. So I have an egg that got roughly 3 day of incubation and then was givin to a friend because they didn't want any chicks so for the day she had it in her bra. It was given to me still toasty I put in my incubator and for the first few days it was up to 38 C then I moved it down to 37.5 C because I learned that was then right temp. Surprisingly it grew and is continuing to grow even though it's day 28..... So I'm a little lost on what to do and if I can or should help, btw there silkies if anyone was wondering (silkies hatch faster right?). The veins we're also thinning around day 18 and further then on day 23 I had a plane trip and go back around 4 days later and it was day 27 candeled it and it had grown and now takes up most of the egg with just a little at the bottom it doesn't take up ant of the air cell as well ( plus the air cell is huge). So all good signs up just hatching late, also sorry for such a long post but there's a lot going on with this egg.

P.S. what's the chance it will be deformed?

Hi there. :frow

No, my Silkies never hatched early... ALWAYS on day 21.

Is the incubator you're using forced or still air? Ever use a calibrated thermometer to check temp?

I would be seriously shocked if any chick hatched at day 27... but if your bator was lower than stated... maybe!

Deformed... maybe. But if it does hatch this late... I would suspect it needs poultry nutri drench... as nutrients diminish inside the egg over time... causing a possible star gazer or something to that effect.

Where have you kept the humidity? This late it's probably a major factor. Where is it now?

How many eggs have ya got? There isn't really anything you can do to help if they haven't tried to pip at least.

You can usually hear peeping once they have internally pipped.

Sadly I only have one so no siblings to encourage it and I know they can get depressed with no friends but I didn't want to let it die and the my friends who gave it to me didn't want chicks. Humidity was at 48 I believe then on day 18 it was changed to 68

Someone said I should poke a hole Into the air cell and I wasn't sure if this was a good idea or if I would just end up killing it any advice?

I've never heard of any chicken egg hatching at day 27, but there still is hope. As you stated, your best bet is to poke a little hole to encourage/help the chick to peck. Does it have a foul stench by any chance? When you candle do you see a ring of blood? if so the chick is dead. If the chick doesn't hatch by day 30 it probably died. I wish you luck, though.

No it doesn't have the blood ring bacteria thing, it also doesn't smell and the veins have thinned and retracted so all good signs but it's just a little scary... I'm starting to wonder if the silkies laid a duck egg or something XD srrsly though I'm getting really worried, also I've been advised by my parents that it's probably a bad idea (I'm a little young but that doesn't mean I don't know anything, just new to the whole thing). What I've been seeing is poking a small whole would probably best bet and if it smells on the inside then I'll know....

By the way what's the latest anyone has had a chicken egg hatch, I want to know a basis of how long I should wait.

The latest I've had a chicken hatch was day 23

also..wow I think that's a duck egg... but i'm not positive. It could just be a rather big chicken egg, though. I'm not super experienced in poultry, sadly, so I cant confirm. (i've never had ducks) You should probably wait for someone who's a bit more experienced to reply. If it is a duck egg, they usually hatch at day 28-29 (I believe). Did the person you get the egg from specify that it was a silkie?

Yeah it looks huge but I just have small hands XD and yeah they only have silkies so unless a duck found it's way in XD. But jokes aside yeah it's a silkie egg.

It's only like 4 1/2 centimeters
