Having eggs

We purchased our chicks on March 13. We have 2 Buffs, 3 white laced chickens, 1 Ancona , no roosters!! Well 3 days ago our Ancona started cackling and walking all over the yard just all of the sudden, it continued for a solid 2 days and low and behold she laid a egg very small. After that she went back to normal and this morning she started goes again trying to find a place to have another egg and cackling away and another egg. They are all free range and they have nest boxes, today she gets up in our potted Japanese Maple and that is where she laid that egg. My husband said bless her heart she acts like she is in labor. LOL none of the others are laying yet.

Are you absolutely sure your dates are right? What age were the chicks when you bought them?

If they really are only 16 weeks, you have a very good hen there! Few hens lay so young. The vast majority of hens will lay between 20-24 weeks, and usually 18 weeks in considered early! 16 is quite uncommon.
