Having free range chickens and a dog.

Greetings from Kansas, Poorchickens, and

! Sorry about your lost chicken. Unsure on the transmitter idea. Personally I would make accommodations to keep the dog away from the chickens or get a different dog if this was happening to me. Good luck to you!

HI chasity, my 5 dogs were all trained using the long leash method that I described above. It took a day for each dog and I have never had any troubles with them. I have a shepherd/akita mix, border collie, classic brown dog, dalmatian and also a terrier. all have the hunting instinct and "get" gophers and pack rats etc on hikes. bUt hey know that the chickens are family as well as the cats and I never have any troubles once they learned the boundaries. 2 of the dogs were puppies in this process and the other 3 were trained as adults, as I rescued them as adults. Good luck, Ruth

With time my hound has understood that the Birds are off limits, it took some time for the chickens too, but now the dog cats and chickens all enjoy the sun in the garden. And now that the hens are full grown they can defend them selfs as a group. When they make noise now my hound wants to make sure they are OK. It went from wanting to eat them to watching after them. You'll get thru it I'm sure you have a nice dog.

I'm new here and after reading other post, I would have a hard time trusting a dog once it has killed a chicken. A fence or a lead is your answer

I think you could get to point where your dog can be around your birds again, it will just take a big time commitment to start training over again from the beginning and work on impulse control training every chance you get. Not easy, but do-able.

Hi. I am 14 and joined just 1 minute ago. because I just Had to tell you that if you beat your dog with the dead chicken he will stop. It sounds cruel but in the long run the dog will get less scolding. Make sure he smells the chicken real good so that when he is walking by the chickens and smells them it will remind him of the beating and he will ether run away or just ignore them. You just have to beat him hard enough that he hates it enough that it won't be worth a chicken lunch.
