Having mini strokes

I had a feeling it was ascites. She hadn't been laying, and I've had four other hens with this. I was surprised because she didn't have the tight drum belly like the others, but it completely adds up. I could have maybe prolonged her life, but I'm blessed she didn't deteriorate like the others. Ascites can be really deceiving, because the hen looses weight as the fluid builds up, giving the illusion that the abdomen is not bloated. I was able to spend lots of time with her in the weeks before, and I don't believe she was suffering very long. Thanks for the advice on the lice guys, I'm going to launch an attack soon, all the other gals are doing well! Also, her waddles turned dark purple as she died, why exactly does that happen?

There are several reproductive disorders that can present very similar. Without further investigation it's hard to know which one and it can sometimes be a "combination". For instance EYP can be accompanied by Ascites.

Your question of why her wattles and comb turned dark purple, my guess would be lack or reduction of oxygen as she was passing.
I'm very sorry, it's heartbreaking to lose a favorite. It is nice that you did get to spend some time with her though.
